Cybersquatting among the ruins
Before the second tower collapsed, the domain name land grab was
already underway: From wtccollapse.com to nukeafghanistan.net.
On Tuesday morning, Sept. 11, while the twin towers of the World
Trade Center crumbled and hijacked jetliners hurtled into the
Pentagon and rural Pennsylvania, Americans were stricken by shock,
anger, grief and grim fascination. Glued to televisions, radios and
Internet news sites, many of us were uncertain of what was happening
or how we should react. But scores of people around the world reacted
decisively to the terrorist attacks, in a peculiar and eerily
detached way: They registered Internet domain names commemorating the
disaster.

Lycos reveals internet name deal with Verisign 
Lycos has announced a deal with Verisign to allow internet users to
register their own domain names online.
The new venture, Lycos Domain, will allow all Lycos Europe's users to
register the newly launched domain name extensions .biz, .info as
well as the traditional .com, .net and .org.

250,000 '.info' domain names to be activated this week
Over this past weekend, Afilias, who is in charge of distributing the
suffix ‘.info’, activated over 52,000 of the ‘.info’ domain names. 
This week, the company expects to enter 250,000 more names into the
internet’s master directories.
