Agency pushing .ca Web domain
The Canadian Internet Registry Authority (CIRA) is under pressure to
increase its marketing efforts to help make the .ca domain name as
well known as the ubiquitous .com.
Until a year ago, it was difficult to obtain a .ca Web site address.
Canada's registration system was run on a part-time basis by John
Demco, a computer facilities manager at the University of British
Columbia, and a small band of volunteers. Applications had to be
faxed, and the rules were so convoluted that only 20,000 .ca names
were registered from 1988 to 2000.
