A good place to start is by reading information about the protocol used to
communicate between a registry and registrar. See the following docs:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-provreg-grrp-reqs-06.txt
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-provreg-epp-06.txt
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-provreg-epp-contact-04.txt
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-provreg-epp-domain-04.txt
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-provreg-epp-tcp-04.txt
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-provreg-epp-host-04.txt

AusRegistry also have a toolkit that makes it easier to use the protocol,
and probably lots of other useful docs.

The docs above give you a good idea of the data structures being used in the
new registry.
