Privacy request

Recently I approached MelbourneIT for a copy of invoices of all registrations that I had undertaken through them. I required them for tax purposes and also I was interested to see how compliant they would be with a privacy request.

The response was that unless I could produce the keys for the domains that I was not entitled to the information. I advised that the keys were contained on the invoices which they had faxed through, and so ...

I was told by staff that given all registrations had taken place through the same registration details and email address that it would be possible to identify the invoices.

Further, it is incumbent upon registries to keep copies of financial records.

I was told that I would have to use the CDM service as what I was requesting was domain name consolidation. This does not gel particularly well with their obligations under the Privacy Act.

I now wish to transfer my domains but am unable to obtain the required information. This matter has been referred to the Federal Privacy Commissioner. It will take about 8 months but it will be interesting to see the outcome.

Kind regards
