AUSTRALIAN ASSOCIATED PRESS 2nd September 2003 GOVT WARNS OF DECEPTIVE DOMAIN NAME SELLERS DOMAIN SYDNEY - The NSW government has warned businesses to beware of two companies offering to register internet domain names, saying the practice was deceptive. Fair Trading Minister Reba Meagher said Domain Names Australia Pty Ltd and Internet Registry Pty Ltd were targeting businesses, seeking a registration fee of up to $237 to register their domain name. "The problem with this approach is that the letter is worded in such a way that it could easily mislead recipients that the fee is to renew an existing domain name, rather than being an offer to establish a new one," she told parliament. "Business operators who sign up with Domain Names Australia or Internet Registry end up with an extra domain name that may be of no additional value to their business." Ms Meagher said the companies had been uncooperative with Fair Trading requests to amend the letters and the office was investigating the matter. The warning was also extended to approaches from Chesley (Chesley) Rafferty, a director of both companies.
