Witnessing the Growth of Arab IGF by Baher Esmat

As I flew home from Algiers after the second Arab Internet Governance Forum at the beginning of October, I reflected on how much progress we have made. In just two short years, we have gone from informal discussions to the more structured Beirut Consultation to the inaugural Arab IGF in Kuwait last year. Now, at the conclusion of our second such gathering, I see plenty of challenges but also plenty of advancement.

Brand gTLD Subdomain Strategy: Navigating the New Technology Platform by Jennifer Wolfe

Windows 8.1 apps and services one vision planBrand gTLD applicants like Apple, Microsoft, McDonalds and Johnson & Johnson, to name just a few, are planning how they will use their brand gTLD(s) in 2014. While most brands agree that simply migrating the home page from .com isn?t the solution, they?re still looking for innovative strategies to deploy their roll out. Many are concerned about how consumers will adapt to this new way of navigating the web and don?t want to lose valuable search equity in their existing .coms.

ICANN gives new TLD applicants a faster path to market

TLD applicants could start registering domains sooner, but there?s a catch. ICANN has changed its plan for mitigating the risk of so-called ?name collisions? at the second level of new TLDs, potentially allowing new top level domain applicants to start selling domains sooner than expected.

In a very casual and low-key footnote over the weekend, ICANN announced it would be further bypassing the Affirmation of Commitments and ignoring the WHOIS Review Team Report. There will be no enhanced validation or verification of WHOIS because unidentified people citing unknown statistics have said it would be too expensive... As a topic which has burned untold hours of community debate and development, the vague minimalist statement dismisses every ounce of work put in by stakeholders.

GoDaddy Pulls Lavabit's Security Creds Because The FBI Got Ahold Of Its Encryption Keys

Two months ago, email company Lavabit abruptly shut down. The email service known to be used by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has been down ever since. Its homepage has been replaced by a note from founder Ladar Levison explaining that he ?refused to be complicit in crimes against the American people.? It was a mysterious shut down at the time, but since then, thanks to court documents becoming public, the full story has come out. And that story coming out has resulted in Lavabit having its Internet security credentials revoked.

All the world?s a shopping cart. A wave of experiments at various companies could take consumer convenience (and impulsiveness) to new heights. Sochi surveillance: how we got the documents, and what they show
