Breaking It Down: the IANA Transition in Practical Pieces by Paul Wilson

As a Regional Internet Registry, APNIC has a strong interest in the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), and the services it provides. We have followed the progress of IANA carefully, in particular through the evolution of ICANN, and the various steps taken by the US Government to reduce its level of oversight. Along with other RIRs, through the NRO, we have made several public statements about the IANA and its future development, mostly in response to US Government enquiries.

< <http://www.circleid.com/posts/20140713_breaking_it_down_the_iana_transition_in_practical_pieces/> http://www.circleid.com/posts/20140713_breaking_it_down_the_iana_transition_in_practical_pieces/>

The US plans to hand over its internet oversight role

An already-tangled internet governance system looks to be getting more complicated, and some fear without US oversight the internet, and its censorship, could fall into authoritarian hands.

< <http://www.globalpost.com/dispatches/globalpost-blogs/rights/US-gives-up-internet-governance-censorship> http://www.globalpost.com/dispatches/globalpost-blogs/rights/US-gives-up-internet-governance-censorship>

Remarks at the 2014 Internet Governance Forum USA by Ambassador Daniel A. Sepulveda

Thank you for the opportunity to speak. All of us, both here and abroad, are partners working to protect the Internet as it was handed down to us by its founders ? free, open, global, and coordinated and governed by everyone with a stake in its future. That operational model has enabled the creation and growth of the world?s greatest drivers for economic, social, and political development since the printing press. This generation, which has benefited so greatly from the Internet, has an obligation to protect and preserve it for future generations.

us: GOP pushes delay of Internet power transfer

House Republicans are pushing the Senate to approve legislation that would delay the Obama administration's plan for relinquishing oversight of the Internet.

France Wants IGF Replaced by World Internet Council by St?phane Van Gelder

Last week, the French Senate unveiled a proposal which, if enacted, would bring sweeping changes to the Internet Governance landscape. A Senate working group worked on the proposal for 6 months. Although it is not only focussed on IG, the report can be seen as a further indictment of ICANN, following French Secretary for the Digital Economy Axelle Lemaire's claim that the organisation is no longer the right place to discuss IG.

BRICS Urged To Create New Model Of Internet Governance

As the governments of the largest emerging economies gather this week in Brazil, a civil society coalition has issued a call for them to lead change in the global system of internet governance in light of revelations of mass surveillance. The groups provide suggestions for constructing a system that ensures human rights, equity and social justice for all people.

< <http://www.ip-watch.org/2014/07/16/civil-society-urges-brics-to-create-new-model-of-internet-governance/> http://www.ip-watch.org/2014/07/16/civil-society-urges-brics-to-create-new-model-of-internet-governance/>

Just Net Coalition Statement to the BRICS Summit in Fortaleza, Brazil

One of the first few leaders to speak out against US spying was Dilma Rousseff, who had called it a ?breach of international law?. It is not surprising, therefore, that the 6th BRICS summit has strongly condemned "acts of mass electronic surveillance and data collection of individuals all over the world, as well as violation of the sovereignty of States and of human rights, in particular the right to privacy." At the eve of the summit, Just Net Coalition, a global network of activists fighting for an open and equitable internet, issued a statement to the BRICS nations with regard to the issue of internet governance.

'BRICS should frame own internet governance model'

The Just Net Coalition, an association of global civil society agencies, has urged the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) to frame an alternative model of internet governance. The current model, it alleges, is largely US-dominated and only serves the interests of a handful of US technology companies. This coincides with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement at the ongoing BRICS Summit on Wednesday, where he asked member countries to take a lead in preserving the internet "as a global common good". Modi termed cyber security as a "major concern".

Request for Proposal for Global Consumer Survey

ICANN is seeking one or more providers to conduct a global survey assessing aspects of consumer trust and perceived consumer choice and the Internet domain name system (DNS). The selected provider(s) will design and execute an initial survey to create a meaningful baseline of data on consumer attitudes and will perform a follow-on survey one year later, to generate a set of comparison data. ICANN is seeking qualified providers to manage this set of complex survey activities in a timely and efficient manner.

Fraudulent ICANN Domain Name Certificates

It has been brought to ICANN's attention that some online entities have attempted to sell fraudulent "certificates", which they claim are required to protect gTLDs. The perpetuators of this scam threaten registrants on the protection service with the objective of securing a fee from the registrant. The "certificates" look official and include an unauthorized use of the ICANN logo.

A Quick Look Inside a GNSO Working Group at ICANN by Joe Catapano

I began my journey with ICANN just over eight months ago. Not being from a technical background, I was entering a whole new world, one that included such things as - new gTLDs; the locking of domain names subject to the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy; and ICANN Accessibility. I found one of the best ways to fully understand how ICANN's stakeholders create policy around these and other vital issues is join an ICANN working group.

As new gTLD registrations break the 1.5 million mark, scammers get in on the act [registration]

By 2020, the problem will considerably worsen, with an estimated USD 120 billion wasted. But a report by the International Energy Agency points to a different path, identifying simple measures that can be implemented now to improve energy efficiency in networked devices, resulting in massive savings of energy and money.
