The IANA transition in a nutshell

The US plan to remove itself from its unique DNS oversight role is about creating a coalition of nations to thwart attempts by Russia and other ?authoritarian? countries to increase government control of the internet.

MPAA Pushes For ICANN Policy Changes to Target ?Pirate? Domains

The MPAA is one of the ICANN partners shaping future policy for the domain name system. With Hollywood being the driving force behind the group the MPAA is particularly interested in making it harder for pirate sites to register and keep their domains, as recent efforts show.

Title II and ICANN by Michael Roberts

Many voices are hailing February 26th as a watershed day in the history of the Internet in the United States. After a year of loud argument, frequent misrepresentations, and epic flows of political contributions, the FCC has restored the open Internet rules which prevailed from 2010 until struck down in a court ruling last year. And it has done so with new reliance on existing provisions of U.S. telecom law which it believes will pass judicial scrutiny.

More Evidence Why Doing Good Pays Off and Love Doesn't by Alex Tajirian

The new gTLDs program can't succeed unless two things happen. The approved registries must do good, and ICANN must weed out applicants who are in love. This is to say that registries should put users' good first, and applicants shouldn't get the nod unless their motive is economic and/or social viability. A recent study reveals that leading companies have enjoyed healthy profits because they made doing good their strategic foundation.

Brands urged to do more to stop 'predatory pricing' in next gTLD round

Elisa Cooper, vice president of domain product marketing for MarkMonitor, has urged brands to do more to encourage ICANN to tackle predatory pricing during new gTLD sunrise periods. Failure to do so may mean that trademark owners are further held to ransom during the second wave of new gTLDs.

TMCH expects uptick in brand engagement when contended strings go live

The Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) officially opened for business in March 2013, and one of the narratives to date has centred on the level of trademark registrations. At the end of January, 34,400 marks from 104 countries had been submitted to the TMCH, yet the pace of registrations has not really kept up with initial expectations. To discuss why, and how, the TMCH is itself taking the message to brand owners, we spoke to sales and marketing manager Peter Van De Wielle.

With .APP, ICANN's auction piggy bank just got even bigger ICANN

ICANN reports that Google paid over $25 million for .APP in the February 25 domain auction. They were willing to bid $30M, but it's a second bid auction so that was just enough to beat out whoever the second highest bidder was. The auction proceeds piggy bank just nearly doubled from $34M to about $59M dollars, and ICANN still has no idea what to do with it.

Protecting yourself online in the new domain name age

... In total, more than 1200 new web extensions are due to be launched over the next few years, and the influx of new domains presents both significant opportunities and threats to brands. Here are some key insights to help navigate the new domain name programme:

Strong interest in gTLDs

There is a clear demand for more options in internet extensions. This is shown in the results of a survey by the Domain Name Association, an independent party that represents the interests of the domain name industry. The survey was conducted in 10 different countries, and gives a general overview of the global interest in the new gTLDs.

CMO Offers Fresh View on New gTLDs: "They're a Channel, Not Just a Label" by Annalisa Roger

Why Attribution Is Important For Today?s Network Defenders

It makes me cringe when I hear operators or security practitioners say, ?I don?t care who the attacker is, I just want them to stop.? I would like to believe that we have matured past this idea as a security community, but I still find this line of thinking prevalent across many organizations - regardless of their cyber threat operation?s maturity level.

How To Recover From A Domain Name Hijacking

Even with over 15 years of experience working on the Internet, and having owned a large online retailer for the past 8 years, I had never heard of and wasn?t familiar with domain name hijacking. - IPv4/IPv6

Why IPv4 is Here to Stay, Part 3: Exhaustion is Just the Beginning

There?s been a lot written about IPv4 depletion recently. You often hear that organizations should adopt IPv6 immediately because IPv4 will soon become a distant memory.

IPv6 Security Myth #7: 96 More Bits, No Magic by Chris Grundemann

This week's myth is interesting because if we weren't talking security it wouldn't be a myth. Say what? The phrase "96 more bits, no magic" is basically a way of saying that IPv6 is just like IPv4, with longer addresses. From a pure routing and switching perspective, this is quite accurate. OSPF, IS-IS, and BGP all work pretty much the same, regardless of address family. Nothing about finding best paths and forwarding packets changes all that much from IPv4 to IPv6.

Internet pioneer Vint Cerf on the future of technology

He is this era?s Alexander Graham Bell. In the early 1970s, Vint Cerf, along with frequent collaborator Bob Kahn, wrote a paper sketching out a way that different computer networks might speak to one another. By 1975, a group working under Cerf at his alma mater, Stanford, had developed a language to enable the inter-network communication imagined in the paper?and, lo, the Transmission Control Protocol was born. The Internet couldn?t exist without its lingua franca, the so-called TCP/IP.

With HTTP/2, Akamai Introduces Next Gen Web

In early 2012 something remarkable happened: a call went out for proposals for a new version of HTTP. From the perspective of an Internet whose warp and weft seemingly shift on a daily basis, this may appear to be just one change amongst many, but because of the importance of HTTP in our daily lives, its impact is difficult to overstate. If you are reading this, it is likely your current job and livelihood would not exist without HTTP. And now, with this call for proposals, the community was about to start work to change and improve that venerable protocol.

The Mobile Internet by Geoff Huston

It has been observed that the most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it, and are notable only by their absence. So how should we regard the Internet? Is it like large scale electricity power generators: a technology feat that is quickly taken for granted and largely ignored? Are we increasingly seeing the Internet in terms of the applications and services that sit upon it and just ignoring how the underlying systems are constructed? To what extent is the mobile Internet driving this change in perception of the Internet as a technology we simply assume is always available, anytime and anywhere? What is happening in the mobile world?
