No, Democracy is Not Excess Baggage

There was quite some controversy at the 3-4 March 2015 UNESCO Connecting the Dots Conference regarding whether or not the term ?democracy? should be included in the conference?s outcome statement to make it clear that internet governance must be democratic.

ICANN brings Caribbean voices to global Internet policy debate

2015 could be the year to kick some Caribbean stereotypes to the curb. The region has been progressively piping up on the global stage, breaking longheld cultural paradigms in the process, in some fairly unlikely ways. Across the Caribbean, the words ?global Internet governance,? for example, are becoming a meaningful catchphrase for collective action through new channels of collaboration, as Caribbean states hammer out their own spaces to discuss their own technology development issues relevant to their national and regional agenda.

Music Industry Demands Action Against ?Pirate? Domain Names

Pressure is mounting on companies that provide domain name services to alleged pirate sites. Following in the footsteps of Hollywood and the U.S. Government, the music industry is now demanding strict anti-piracy measures. The EFF, however, notes that companies are not obliged to take action without a valid court order.

Hollywood Asks Domain Registrars to Censor the Web for Intellectual Property Infringement

The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has built an arsenal of tools to pressure other nations to enact enforcement measures that benefit major entertainment companies such as the members of the Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America.

ICANN, copyright infringement, and ?the public interest?

Last month, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) issued a carefully-worded statement urging ICANN ? the overseer of much of the Internet?s fundamental naming and numbering infrastructure ? to take more vigorous action against the ?use of domain names for illegal and abusive activities, including those related to IP infringement? (i.e., motion picture piracy).

The overhaul of Finnish electronic communications legislation, i.e. the Information Society Code, also touches on the domain name business. In this respect, the goal of the new legislation is above all to clarify the roles of the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA) and domain name brokers by offering customers a one-stop shop.

Don't Confuse Brand and Category-Label New gTLDs by Alex Tajirian

The domain name industry gets brand and label confused. A brand sums up what makes a company unique to its customers. A label tells what category a company goes in; it sums up what the product has in common with other products of that type. Sedan and SUV are category labels; Volvo is a brand, one that means safety to customers. Similarly Tesla Motors has its distinctive "Tesla" brand, but it introduces products to its users as "electric vehicles."

"What's in a Name?" Using DANE for Authentication of Internet services

Do we already have strong security protections for our Internet services? For many years now, we have had numerous cryptographically enhanced protocols. Standards and suites like S/MIME, Transport Layer Security (TLS), IP Security (IPSec), OpenPGP, and many others have been mature for years, have offered us a range of protections and have been implemented by a wealth of code.

Trio of Six-Figure Sales (one Topping a Half Million Dollars) Headline This Week's Domain Sales Report

Spring is still a couple of weeks away but impressive domain sales continue to blossom at a variety of venues. Heritage Auctions closed several sizeable sales made at the live auction they staged last month at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, including three that smashed through the six-figure barrier. That trio, led by NL.com at $575,000, fills the first three slots on this week's all extension Top 20 Sales Chart. NL.com also ranks as the third biggest sale reported so far this year.
