On the Issue of ?Jurisdiction? over ICANN by Paul Rosenzweig

By now readers of this blog know, the United States is in the midst of a transition that will, when completed, give up its contractual control of the IANA. That authority is currently conducted by ICANN under contract to the Department of Commerce. Current plans are for Commerce to end the contract in September 2015, and let ICANN manage the IANA function on its own. Some, including me, favor the transition but are concerned that it will occur without an increase in accountability and transparency at ICANN.

ICANN, Meet Your New Master, the FCC

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), an executive branch agency within the Department of Commerce, sparked controversy last year when it announced its intent to transition its oversight of Internet domain names to ?the global multistakeholder community.? The controversy is now over. The NTIA no longer has authority to relinquish U.S. control over the Internet domain name system. Though few seem to have realized it, the FCC assumed plenary jurisdiction over Internet numbering in its 2015 net neutrality order reclassifying the broadband Internet as telecommunications (Reclassification Order).

>From Connecting Computers to Connecting Stakeholders: Stanford Univ. Hosts NetMundial Initiative by Wolfgang Kleinw?chter

1974, Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf checked in the Crown Plaza Hotel in Palo Alto, worked a couple of days and presented to the world the TCP/IP protocol. Stanford hosted one of the four computers connected on equal footing (ARPANET) in 1969... A framed document in the hotel lobby remembers the historic moment. On March 31, 2014 a crowd of about 30 people from all over the world checked in the same Crown Plaza hotel for the first working meeting of the new Coordination Council (CC) of the NetMundial Initiative (NMI).

What to Know About an ICANN Compliance Audit, and How to Handle One if You Are Selected? by Alexa Raad

Now that new gTLD registries have been operating for more than a year, a few registries have already experienced going through an audit and a few more are now receiving notifications that they are next in line. For all, the process of going through an ICANN audit is a first. Once you receive the Request for Information (RFI), you will have 15 days to respond, or seek an extension of time. Extensions may be available on a case by case basis.

What Taylor Swift Can Teach Your Company About Protecting Its Brand Online

Earlier this month, the ever business-savvy pop star unwittingly generated a ton of click bait for publishers by doing something smart: She registered her name under the new adult-themed TLDs .porn and .adult. It's a wise move for any brand, but these salacious-sounding TLDs are just the beginning: The number of available website domain names is about to explode.

Premium Generics, the Domain Industry's Luxury Goods by St?phane Van Gelder

Categories. The mere mention of the word risks eliciting groans from any domain industry specialist. In the run up to the new gTLD program, this concept was oft discussed. It seemed obvious to most that TLDs were not a homogenous ensemble but instead, could exist in many different shapes and sizes. Except to ICANN staff. They systematically refused to entertain the notion of categories. Even when ICANN Board members suggested some kind of recognition for different TLD types should be hardwired into the program!

How DNS is Exploited: Paul Vixie on How Criminals Leverage Internet Architecture

The Internet is a global engine of commerce today, but it was never designed with such grandiose applications in mind. In the underlying architecture of the Internet, hostility was never a design criterion, and this has been extensively exploited by criminals, who capitalize on the Domain Name System infrastructure - the map of the Internet - which is indispensable for the Internet as we know it to function.

The Department of Defense first laid out plans to convert its network to the Internet Protocol Version 6 standard in 2003.
