Toward a Social Compact for Digital Privacy and Security: Statement by the Global Commission on Internet Governance

On the occasion of the April 2015 Global Conference on Cyberspace meeting in The Hague, the Commission calls on the global community to build a new social compact between citizens and their elected representatives, the judiciary, law enforcement and intelligence agencies, business, civil society and the Internet technical community, with the goal of restoring trust and enhancing confidence in the Internet.

Internet kingmakers cry mercy over mad dash to fill global DNS throne

The internet's backstage community is crying for mercy over the work schedule for deciding the fate of IANA ? the crucial body that allocates IP addresses and runs the world's DNS for domain-name overseer ICANN.

Hey, you wanna help run the internet? This power restructure is for YOU

The organization that oversees the top level of the internet, ICANN, will be restructured into a true membership-controlled organization under plans drafted this week. That's important because ICANN, right now, has the keys to the web, and the more that can be done to hold it to account, the better.

3 Steps for Managing ICANN Registry Compliance by Corey Grant

If you are like the majority of Registry Operators we have spoken to, you may now be thinking that compliance with your new gTLD Registry Agreement is much more difficult than first envisaged -- especially if you are one of the lucky operators which have been chosen for ICANN's latest round of registry audits! You may also be surprised at the number of questions and requests that you need to respond to.

Most Of The $2,500 .Sucks Domains Have Their .Com Available To Register

A previous post contained a list of 89 .sucks domain names that have been registered by trademark holders during the first few days of the sunrise period for .sucks. Here is what a search for the corresponding .com domains revealed:

< <http://onlinedomain.com/2015/04/10/news/most-of-the-2500-sucks-domains-have-their-com-available-to-register/> http://onlinedomain.com/2015/04/10/news/most-of-the-2500-sucks-domains-have-their-com-available-to-register/>

ICANN and a lot of other people outsmart themselves with .SUCKS

Good taste has never been a criterion in ICANN's new domains program, and domains including .fail and the remarkably vulgar .wtf have become part of the DNS with little comment. Now we have .sucks, which is intended to empower consumers, but does so in a way so clumsy that ICANN is asking regulators in the U.S. and Canada for an excuse to shut it down.

Framing New gTLDs' Marketing Message

In an earlier essay, I outlined a focused, cooperative marketing strategy that would be a first step for marketing new gTLDs. After that first initiative, gTLD registries' marketing strategy must focus on the complementarities between .com, and new neutral (such as .global and .web) and branding and labeling gTLDs. The legacy domains and the newcomers can work together nicely. If we don't realize this, all Internet users will lose out.

A New Weapon to Combat Cybersquatting: File Suit against Domain Registrars and Hosting Companies

Cybersquatting, under the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA), 15 U.S.C. ? 1125(d), is registering, trafficking in, or using an Internet domain name with bad faith intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else. The cybersquatter may offer to sell the domain to the person or company who owns the trademark contained within the domain name but at an inflated price. Sometimes, cybersquatters post paid links to the trademark owner?s website via advertising networks, thus monetizing their squatting by collecting fees for referring traffic to the owner?s site.
