In December, the UN General Assembly will be convening in New York to
discuss a range of issues related to Internet policy and development. This
convening, a culmination of the review process of the WSIS, will be guided
by a negotiated document that sets out the scope of issues the government

Preview of Internet Governance Forum 2015

The IGF kicks off next week in Jo?o Pessoa, Brazil and I?ll be an active
participant. The theme for this IGF is the ?Evolution of Internet
Governance: Empowering Sustainable Development?, which seeks to highlight
the role the Internet, and ICTs more generally, play in economic
development. A key focus will be the importance of reinforcing the linkages
between Internet governance and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
that were adopted at the United Nations in September.

Discussion Platform for all Questions about Internet Governance

Whereas previous meetings of the IGF have served above all as a platform for
exchanging ideas, the meeting on 10 ? 13 November in Jo?o Pessoa will set
the future agenda in important ways. eco Chair Prof. Michael Rotert is
participating again this year in the IGF. In the following short interview,
he explains the background to the event and gives voice to his own personal
expectations.

The kernel of the argument: Fast, flexible and free, Linux is taking over
the online world. But there is growing unease about security weaknesses.

It took years for the Internet to reach its first 100 computers. Today, 100
new ones join each second. And running deep within the silicon souls of most
of these machines is the work of a technical wizard of remarkable power, a
man described as a genius and a bully, a spiritual leader and a benevolent
dictator.

The cost of immaturity: The business of protecting against computer-hacking
is booming

The average time between an attacker breaching a network and its owner
noticing the intrusion is 205 days. Like most statistics touted by the
cyber-security industry, such as the supposed annual $575 billion global
cost of 90m cyber-attacks, it is little more than a guesstimate. But there
is no doubt that criminals and pranksters are thriving by attacking
computers and networks (see article), that companies are struggling to cope
and that businesses offering answers are charging fat fees.

Sale of 989.com Closes at Over $800,000 Giving Rick Schwartz 3 of Year's Top
5 Sales

Last week I told you that I expected to be able to chart a blockbuster sale
from Rick Schwartz soon. Michael Berkens first reported the $818,181.81 sale
of 989.com on October 20, but the domain had not been transferred at the
time we put together last week's report. That has now been done with
Escrow.com having received full payment as well as the domain that they will
now move on to the Chinese buyer.

kingdom, ahem, rankings, with immediate effect. The SEO nobility were
scared. Some began to speak of what eventually became known as Mobilegeddon.
