Reducing and Managing U.S.-China Conflict in Cyberspace

Last week, the Financial Times ran a story that suggested China was sticking by its September 2015 commitment to not engage in cyber-enabled economic espionage. It quoted officials from private sector security firms, who pointed out they had seen a marked decline in the number of intrusion attempts from Chinese actors. Despite the seemingly positive news, there are still tons of skeptics.

Internet Governance in Transition: The ITU as a Battleground for Rival Visions by David A. Gross

During the past few years, the ITU has been a battleground where governments promote rival visions of how the Internet should be governed. Although there has been a recent cease-fire as Internet governance debates have focused more on the role of ICANN, those skirmishes may soon restart at the ITU... Co-authored by Ambassador Gross (chair of Wiley Rein's International & Internet Practice), Carl R. Frank, Umair Javed, and Sara M. Baxenberg (members of Wiley Rein's Telecom, Media & Technology Practice).

WSIS, Development, and Internet Governance: A Plea for 'Star Trek' over 'Mad Max' by Michael Oghia

Humanity continues to find itself at a crossroads. Ahead of us lies an uncertain future filled with predictions of imminent doom and ominous prospects along with the wonders of science and technology. Behind us lies a century marked paradoxically by both devastating global conflicts and unparalleled global collaboration. As societies continue to globalize, we are increasingly becoming more connected - to the point where it is difficult, if not impossible, to divorce ourselves from the interconnectivity in contemporary systems of commerce, economics, politics, and culture.

ICANN vs. the Federal Reserve by Jay Fenello

The Internet is about to go independent. After years of support and supervision, the U.S. Government is about to irrevocably relinquish its control over the Internet by transferring its authority to an independent corporation named ICANN. As part of this push, the current chairman of ICANN posted this article to the Wall Street Journal... What's truly amazing about this piece, is how well it's done... It was only after digesting this piece, that I remembered we are talking about ICANN here.

Websites Ending In ?.AS? Have Been Vulnerable to Takeovers Since the '90s

TLDs like ".com" have been spruced up over the years with customizable options that are often associated with specific countries?for instance, ".ly" for Libya. But these domains are known for security issues. The latest is a problem with American Samoa's ".as" domain registry that for years has left sites using the suffix vulnerable to takeovers.

uk: Girls in IT: What?s the problem, and how can we solve it? by Russell Haworth, CEO

New research by Nominet holds some good news for the future of Britain?s technology industry. When we asked young people about their ?dream job?, IT-based careers took the top three spots. Nearly 25% of 11-18 year olds want to be a computer game developer, with app developer and website developer coming in next at around 13% each. For those of us in the industry ? especially those looking ahead to future recruitment needs ? it?s good to see that a career in IT is something many young Brits aspire to.

The Fight Over the .africa Domain Name

An explosion of domain names has reshaped the Internet by offering hundreds of new ways to end a Web address. Lawyers can now advertise websites with ?.lawyer,? while toy companies can register with ?.toys.? Jokers who want to build a site whose name ends with ?.fail? or ?.wtf? can do that, too.

Looking past the dot by Stuart Fuller, NetNames

The new gTLD programme has had its second birthday and slowly but surely organisations both big and small are seeing the branding opportunities both to the left and right of the dot within domain names. We?ve worked closely with a number of our clients to secure opportunities for them to register relevant generic names which tick all three boxes of the Google search mantra to be meaningful, memorable and relevant. Examples such as street.lighting, sports.bet and our very own brand.protection underline the opportunities that exist within the new gTLD programme in terms of sector registrations.

au: Productivity Commission?s recommendations on IP reform likely to be lost in election haze

The Productivity Commission aspires to act as the Government?s economic conscience, providing advice that from a neoliberal mindset is rational, but may be politically inconvenient. The Productivity Commission intellectual property report: moderate and measured

The recently released Productivity Commission report on the Australian intellectual property system is thorough and measured. Its recommendations are far from radical but if implemented would improve the environment for the creation and use of knowledge-based products in Australia. Currently, too many parts of the intellectual property system merely service rent seekers ? that is, those who seek rules and regulations that merely transfer income from other people to themselves without any net addition to social wealth.
