Fighting Internet Fragmentation

In Washington, DC this week, information policy leaders shared their
respective thoughts around Internet fragmentation, a move from a universally
connected Internet to one divided into disparate networks via regulations,
technology or unintended consequences. This was not a theoretical
discussion, but one grounded in the realities of connectivity issues,
security, logical barriers and the voluntary agreements that keep the
Internet working.

collective ability to use the Internet to bolster economic growth and

a special responsibility to promote security, stability, and economic ties

The Five Year Dot Brand Engagement by Jennifer Wolfe

It's been four years now since the "Big Window" of opportunity to own a gTLD
closed and we all learned that Google had applied for 101, Amazon for 76 and
half of the world's top brands had applied to operate their own gTLD: the
"Dot Brand."

Looking Back on the First Round of New gTLD Applications: Implications for
Trademarks and Freedom of Expression

ICANN is the body that, among other things, administers the domain name
system with respect to gTLDs -- that is, the string of characters to the
right of the "dot." While constituted as a technical, administrative body,
ICANN soon found itself embroiled in intellectual property policy concerns
about who had rights to which domain names. The challenges for ICANN
increased exponentially when it released its new gTLD program. The first
round of applications for new gTLDs took place in 2012, and applications are
still being processed. With the second round of applications forthcoming,
this paper looks back at some of the lessons learned from the first round
with respect to trademarks, domain names and freedom of expression.

Does Moving to a New gTLD Domain Name Help Rankings?

I've been doing SEO for the better of 15 years now, and have seen a lot of
website marketing techniques and plenty of SEO techniques come and go over
the years. Some are still around-and really do drive quality traffic to
websites. But there are those techniques considered black hat, grey hat, or
just too spammy that they've essentially been dismissed as legitimate
marketing methods.

IPv6 at LinkedIn

I recently had the honor of being invited back to Paris by Eric Vyncke and
Mark Townsley to present at the Cisco Ecole Polytechnique Networking
Innovation and Research Symposium. I generally tend to avoid Paris in the
winter but the opportunity was too good to pass up, especially with the
amazing lineup of speakers.

IESG Retreat

The IESG has just had a two and half days of meetings in Cambridge,
Massachusetts. These events are an important opportunity for our group to
meet and discuss broader topics and IETF work in more depth than is possible
during the regular IETF meetings. This time our meeting discussed topics
around IETF and Bluetooth collaboration, Internet privacy, IETF working
group charters, the RFC series, area director job descriptions, mentoring,
and many others.

Inside Interview: An Exclusive Look at a $76,000 .INFO Acquisition

Just under a year ago, Swedish entrepreneur Jonas Bonde acquired the $76,000
domain name Car.info in one of the largest .INFO domain name sales of all
time. As the name suggests, Jonas and his team are building a data website
for cars. It looks to be a big project, but Jonas is no stranger to online
business.

Eleven 3-Letter .Coms Lead Way

Short .coms were back in the saddle this week in a dominating performance
that shut out every other extension on our latest weekly Top 20 Sales Chart.
Only four of the 20 chart entries was longer than four characters. NameJet
led the assault with 746.com at $121,000 and went on to sweep all but one
chart position after releasing all of their April sales at once.
