GOVERNANCE

**********************

Remarks of Assistant Secretary Strickling at The Internet Governance Forum USA: Remarks of Lawrence E. Strickling, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information

I come here today to speak out for freedom. Specifically, Internet freedom. I come here to speak out for free speech and civil liberties. I come here to speak out in favor of the transition of the U.S. government?s stewardship of the domain name system to the global multistakeholder community. And I come here to speak out against what former NTIA Administrator John Kneuer has so aptly called the ?hyperventilating hyperbole? that has emerged since ICANN transmitted the consensus transition plan to us last March.

Closing Remarks at the Internet Governance Forum USA: Ambassador Daniel A. Sepulveda, Deputy Assistant Secretary and U.S. Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy, Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs

Thank you, Shane, for the introduction. I also want to thank the U.S. IGF Multistakeholder Planning Committee for planning this event and the Center for Strategic and International Studies for hosting. As you all know, the international Internet Governance Forum has become the premier global, multistakeholder venue for candid and timely dialogue on cross-cutting Internet issues.

NTIA Chief: IANA Handoff Key to Internet Freedom

NTIA chief Larry Strickling says moves like handing off oversight of ICANN's authority over internet naming conventions is the best way to preserve internet freedom.

Jurisdiction: the taboo topic at ICANN

The DK Zone even more secure

So far, One of the nodes serving the .DK zone has so far run from a single server in Chicago with a 1 Gbit/s connection. From now, we let CIRA run the DK zone on their anycast cloud of 7 servers with 10 Gbit/s each worldwide. It makes us much more resistant to attack, especially DDoS, and it makes us less dependent on the other anycast provider, we have already.

... Use of .nl domain names to be compulsory for legitimate gambling sites? In the course of the debate regarding the new legislation, it was repeatedly suggested that legitimate gambling providers licensed in the Netherlands should be obliged to offer their services under .nl domain names. The thinking behind the proposal was that gamblers would be able to tell from the extension that a site was trustworthy.

Last week, CDT submitted its second set of comments to the FCC as it considers a new rulebook for protecting consumer privacy in the use of broadband. The FCC?s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on this issue is an important first step towards providing broadband consumers with the assurance they need that their ISP will not track their online activities ? the websites they frequent, the apps they download, the searches they perform ? or sell that information to third parties without their knowledge and consent.

The Value of a Hacked Company

Most organizations only grow in security maturity the hard way ? that is, from the intense learning that takes place in the wake of a costly data breach. That may be because so few company leaders really grasp the centrality of computer and network security to the organization?s overall goals and productivity, and fewer still have taken an honest inventory of what may be at stake in the event that these assets are compromised.
