I said "if"...and I was not assuming it would happen although
it would not be hard to do, especially in the United States.

Also, we have not yet seen the new service models emerge.
Those will change the LANdscape in this area substantially.
Most ISPs are not prepared for the paradigm shift that is
coming. I suspect that some will be lost when the Internet
is turned inside out by the new models. Those that currently
think they are on the edges building their networks around
the traditional telecom monopolies will find that they are
on the inside looking outward toward people building a new
layer around the edge. Some will not be able to swim fast
enough to escape the whirlpool that will pull them to the core.
