ICANN conference focuses on security
The annual meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers, (ICANN), began this week with a warning from a US
congressman that unless domain registrars can verify their customers,
US law makers may step in and force them to do it.
"Without verification, we leave the field open for malevolent
registrants," and that includes anyone from intellectual property
thieves to terrorists using the Web to raise money and exchange
information, said Howard Berman.

ICANN MEETING UNDERWAY WITH SECURITY FOCUS
A US lawmaker told participants at an ICANN meeting that
domain-name sellers have an obligation to keep accurate
records of their customers to ensure they can be contacted
if they are improperly using trademarked names or engaging
in other illegal activity. California Democratic Rep.
Howard Berman claims that such careless oversight allows
scam artists, cybersquatters and others to hide their true
identities, providing a barrier for law-enforcement
officials. The comments come as the meeting focuses
primarily, though not exclusively (major discussion on
at-large issues last night), on security issues.

AFILIAS SHIFTS FROM .INFO TO .AU
Afilias, the company that operates the .info Internet
suffix, has partnered with Melbourne, Australia-based
Internet address seller RegistrarsAsia and has submitted a
bid to run Australia's sovereign .au domain on behalf of the
Australian government and the Australian Domain
Administration (auDA). Last month, auDA signed off on a
registry agreement with the ICANN, which formalized auDA's
role as the official governing organization for .au.
Meanwhile, Robert Elz, the former dot-au administrator,
continues to argue that a transfer of .org.au would be
inappropriate.
