I recently transferred a domain to enetica within 2 weeks of expiry but the
renewal date changed to the date of transfer.. so I lost about 9 days ... no
big deal but not right just the same. I never chased it up as I thought that
was what happens...

That is correct. A domain name can only be renewed within 90 days of the
expiry date.
A domain name supplier may not send a renewal notice prior to that period.
This was introduced to stop deceptive marketing.

A transfer within this period has the same effect as a renewal.

Outside of the renewal period, a domain name may be transferred but is
seldom necessary.
