Yes they are active domain names and the passwords do work. They are .net.au registrations registered by Domain Names Australia through the Registrar Explorer. Explorer or their reseller have obviously scanned the Ausregistry database and extracted the whois details relating to the corresponding .com.au domain names and decided to simply apply those details against the .net.au registration. Today we have received a number of emails confirming .net.au registrations from Domain Names Australia due to the fact that some of the older registrations we put through Melbourne IT still have our email address noted as the registrant contact. Some we are not the registrant contact, but once were.
