Douglas Engelbart dies at age 88; computer visionary
Douglas Carl Engelbart, who in the 1960s envisioned the power of interconnected computers to accelerate the pursuit of knowledge and solve the world's increasingly complex problems, laying the foundation for the modern computing age and the Internet, died in his sleep at his home in Atherton, Calif., on Tuesday night. He was 88. ... In the early 1970s, his laboratory was one of those that hosted the ARPAnet, the forerunner of the Internet. It also hosted the Network Information Center, which would eventually become officially responsible for doling out Internet domain names.

Douglas Engelbart, computer visionary and inventor of the mouse, dies at 88
With fellow SRI engineer William English, Dr. Engelbart tested all of the pointing gadgets available at the time and decided a contraption that would roll around on a desktop was fastest and most accurate. Working with English, he developed a thick wooden block that rolled on metal wheels and connected to the computer via a cord. ... In the early 1970s, Dr. Engelbart?s laboratory was one of the four initial sites to host ARPAnet, the Internet precursor, and was the first to host the Network Information Center, which would eventually become responsible for allocating Internet domain names.

Beware the Internet and the danger of cyberattacks
If I could, I would repeal the Internet. It is the technological marvel of the age, but it is not ? as most people imagine ? a symbol of progress. Just the opposite. We would be better off without it. I grant its astonishing capabilities: the instant access to vast amounts of information, the pleasures of YouTube and iTunes, the convenience of GPS and much more. But the Internet?s benefits are relatively modest compared with previous transformative technologies, and it brings with it a terrifying danger: cyberwar. Amid the controversy over leaks from the National Security Agency, this looms as an even bigger downside.

It?s the Internet Age, but Pacific Islands Struggle With Slow Speeds and Poor Connections
The opening line on the Kingdom of Tonga?s tourism website reads, ?Welcome to life in the slow lane.? It could be the national motto. The Polynesian nation of 176 far-flung islands ? but just 105,000 people ? has a long tradition of sitting on the sidelines of world affairs. Alone among island nations of the Pacific, Tonga was never colonized by a foreign power, mostly because foreign powers saw no compelling reason to extend their empires some 2,000 miles east of Australia. An unbroken succession of local chiefs and kings has ruled over the islands for more than a thousand years. But there are downsides to Tonga?s state of restful isolation.
