Independent Review Panel Decision on Hold/Stay Regarding .Africa

An ICANN Independent Review Panel has issued a decision that ICANN should hold off from further processing of ZA Central Registry's (ZACR) application for the .AFRICA TLD for the time being. This will allow the Panel time to consider arguments from DotConnectAfrica Trust (DCA Trust) and ICANN on DCA Trust's claims regarding the .AFRICA TLD.

When we last met in Singapore, the NTIA announcement on transitioning stewardship of the IANA functions was still very fresh and we adjusted our meeting schedules to begin constructive discussions in response. The processes governing these discussions are now in motion, and we want to support them with open dialogue with as many stakeholders as possible.

Verizon counsel slams gTLD opportunists

?We have seen lots of cybersquatting but not a lot of innovation, which was one of the arguments for the new gTLDs programme?. So stated Sarah B Deutsch, vice president and associate general counsel for Verizon Communications, speaking at the INTA Annual Meeting earlier today, where she added: ?We are seeing a steady flow of cybersquatters jumping in as new gTLDs roll out?. She therefore called on trademark counsel to record instances of abuse to inform later reviews of the gTLD programme.

Is the Future of .BRAND TLDs to Be Registered Just Like a Domain Name? by Jean Guillon

Will .BRAND TLDs be made available for registration at Registrars like GoDaddy, just like second level domains are? My guess is that it will and here are the reasons why... Applying for a new domain name extension, for a new gTLD, is not so simple because you are required to submit a complete application to ICANN and this does not happen that often, it's happened once only and was called "the First Round" (of the ICANN new gTLD program).

< <http://www.circleid.com/posts/20140513_is_future_of_brand_tlds_to_be_registered_like_a_domain_name/> http://www.circleid.com/posts/20140513_is_future_of_brand_tlds_to_be_registered_like_a_domain_name/>

Whether Republican, Democrat or Independent, the ?.GOP? gTLD is one to consider

?.GOP?, now in sunrise, is notable as it is the only new gTLD in the first round of applications to be operated by a political party. However, one commentator has urged brands to consider the string when devising their registration strategies, no matter what their political persuasion.

A glimpse of what will happen when new TLDs hit their first renewal date?

2014 will be remembered ? by those conscious of the domain industry at least ? as the year of the TLD experiment. To what extent extensions such as .GURU, .PHOTOGRAPHY, .RICH, .LONDON, or .??? catch on with the general public remains to be seen. For a year, the question has been hotly debated. But it?s not a question; it?s hundreds of distinct questions, since hundreds of distinct new TLDs are part of this year?s rollout.

Recommendations for Adding Cybersecurity Intelligence to the Smart Grid by Josh Ray

Over the last few years, there has been an increased effort to modernize the U.S. electric grid. Building a "Smart Grid" has been central in the effort to help utilities better manage their resources, minimize power outages and reduce energy consumption. However, adding more electronic devices and sensors to the grid's network has made it a prime target of cyberattacks, like Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which if successful, could cause wide-spread disruption of services affecting many other sectors.

Domain Name Seller Pushes the Envelope Too Far

Domain name purchase negotiations went seriously awry here. SelectHealth, Inc., is a Utah corporation and health insurance provider. James E. Risinger is a Texas resident. Risinger owned the domain name selecthealth.com. SelectHealth contacted Risinger about purchasing the domain name and entered into negotiations with Risinger. Risinger copied SelectHealth?s website, selecthealth.org, and pasted it into the selecthealth.com website. Risinger then added a registration survey and email capability to the selecthealth.com website. Over 1,200 emails and 637 registrations were collected by Risinger, who then turned this information over to SelectHealth, apparently in an effort to drive up the domain name?s purchase price.

How to Speak Your Customers' Language With Localized Websites

While English is the most commonly used language online, most Europeans prefer to buy things in their own languages. Here are three ways to localize for an international audience. A single English language website can still allow you to reach an international audience. English is the most commonly used language online and to some extent it still serves as a lingua franca or common language across the Web. But it only represents around a quarter of total usage, and many visitors who use English as a second language place more trust in websites written in their own native language.
