2014 ? A Crucial Year for the Internet by Markus Kummer

We are quickly approaching the mid-point in a pivotal year for the evolution of the Internet. I recently spoke at the INET Istanbul, which offered another important opportunity for multistakeholder dialogue on critical Internet issues. The INET provided a bridge between two important meetings -- just one month after NETmundial in S?o Paulo, Brazil and a few months ahead of the 9th meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), which will also be held in Istanbul in early September. These meetings call upon the international community to reflect on the kind of Internet we want and how we want to answer the many open questions related to its governance and its future.

ICANN Website Update by Chris Gift

For some time now, we?ve been building a new website for ICANN in a process we?ve documented elsewhere on this blog. That site went live a few weeks ago and we?ve been directing an increasing number of users from the old ICANN site to the new one over the last few weeks. We proceeded cautiously in that transition process in the hope of surfacing issues as we went ? the sort of issues that you only discover about a site once it is live and users begin to test it for real.

Help ICANN Fix Whois Conflicts With Data Privacy Law by Michele Neylon

ICANN has opened a comment period in relation to whois conflicts with local law / data privacy law. Of course anytime ICANN, or anyone else, tries to make any changes to whois policy there are issues. Whois is, for a variety of reasons, an emotive subject... under EU law many feel that registration details for domain name registrants need to be handled in a manner that is more compatible with the EU Directives and local law.

Demystifying Premium Domain Names by Jean Guillon

For the purpose of this article it is not necessary to concentrate too much on defining what a Premium domain name is and what it is useful for: all that we need to know is simple, a premium domain name is often a memorable generic name, short or medium in length and highly valuable due to its relevance in search. However, when it comes to finding out how to register a premium domain name then it becomes much more difficult because you won't necessarily know where to go.

Preserve Dot ART by Joshua Wattles

ICANN has a choice: it can promote the arts or destroy their common identity. ".ART " can become an authentic Internet address for the arts and represent its community. We are on the cusp of an extraordinary opportunity with the simple use of a single word: a virtual place within the Internet for the arts and a virtual palace to the arts built site-by-site by millions of artists and art institutions each with an individualized artistic contribution gathered around the simple namespace of ".ART."

New gTLDs do more harm than good

It?s been a few months now since the bevy of new gTLDs were made available. These were supposed to rock the domain name registration business and change the Internet landscape forever. We?re all used to the traditional TLDs, such as .net, .com and .org, and the point of the initiative is to add a bunch of new gTLDs to create more options because the Internet is running out of good domain names to use. Now if I own a tattoo parlor, I can register company.tattoo. Or if I?m a tax advisor, I can register company.tax.

APNIC receives additional IPv4 allocation from IANA

LACNIC's announcement that its inventory of IPv4 addresses has reached less than a /9 (or 8,388,608 addresses) today triggered the activation of IANA's Recovered Pool of addresses. This means IANA will make a distribution to each RIR, including APNIC, every six months until the pool is exhausted. APNIC has received a /11 of IPv4 address space (2,097,152 addresses) from IANA under the Recovered Pool Policy.

IANA Allocates Recovered IPv4 Addresses to RIRs

On 20 May 2014, LACNIC became the first of the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) to reach their last /9 of remaining IPv4 address space. This triggered a global policy for IANA to make equal allocations from its recovered IPv4 pool to each of the five RIRs.

LACNIC?s IPv4 Address Pool Now Down to a /9

LACNIC?s IPv4 address pool is now down to 8,388,606 addresses, which is equivalent to a /9. This fact triggers a new phase of the IPv4 exhaustion plan designed by LACNIC for Latin America and the Caribbean based on the policies approved by the regional community.

IANA Issues /11 to ARIN
