Modi government?s approach to internet governance must be strengthened

Prime Minister Narendra Modi?s government has signalled the policy direction and future roadmap in many sectors. It has announced a comprehensive Digital India initiative that would cater to digital infrastructure capacity building, governance and services on demand and digital empowerment of citizens. What remains untouched is the approach to internet governance position and regime.

Bringing Order to Chaos by Byron Holland

If we were to apply themes to Internet governance world, the narrative for 2014-15 is definitely 'change'. The governance ecosystem is knee deep in the IANA transition, with a few meetings and teleconferences of the IANA Transition Coordinating Group behind us, and a ramping up of activity around ICANN accountability and governance. While the IANA transition and ICANN accountability processes are being conducted in parallel and independently, it's important to note that not only are they related, they are dependent on one another.

ANA warns that ICANN decision-making could be reduced to political logrolling

The Association of National Advertisers has warned of the dangers behind plans to enhance the GAC?s role in ICANN decision-making, arguing that the move would weaken the multi-stakeholder model and ? absent transparent procedural safeguards ? could see governments make concessions on internet governance decisions in a bid to receive political favours elsewhere.

ANA Files Comments in Opposition to ICANN?s GAC Proposal

In response to a new and worrisome proposal put forth by the Board of ICANN, ANA today filed comments in opposition to this overbroad step by the Board. The proposal plans to dramatically increase the influence of the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) within ICANN. As it stands today, GAC is a very powerful committee made up of national governments and, usually as observers, UN agencies and other multi-national organizations. There are currently 137 GAC members and 30 observers.

ICANN Gives the Finger Lakes an Answer

In a Sept. 12 letter to Rep. Tom Reed (R-N.Y.), a congressman from the Finger Lakes wine-producing region in the United States, ICANN board chair Steve Crocker explains the state of legal protections against abusive registrations in the coming .wine and .vin TLDs and why ICANN will not be doing anything more to alleviate concerns from wine makers. As Crocker points out, the legal protections for .wine and .vin go well beyond what is currently offered in the .com, .net., and .biz TLDs.

Industry Association: An Implementation Model by Kurt Pritz

We read carefully Scott Hollenbeck's call to form a Domain Name Industry association to promote consistency in technical operations across the many moving parts of the industry and we, the Board and members of the Domain Name Association, largely agree. In this blog post I'll describe a way to make that happen.
