Forums on internet governance reveal tensions over how the web should be regulated by Arne Hintz, Lecturer in Media at Cardiff University

How the internet is governed is no longer a matter seen fit to be left to mere technical committees. With the extent of online surveillance, so dramatically revealed by the Snowden files, increased content filtering and blocking, and the issue of net neutrality, which would allow telecoms firms to ?create fast web lanes? for some companies, it is a contentious area with major social and political implications.

Scotland could face a .problem

Scotland has plenty to sort out as its people vote on their future: about currency, European Union, oil revenue and tax. Now there may be a different thorny problem ? from the world of technology. ... Here it gets complicated, says Stuart Fuller, director of commercial operations at NetNames, an online brand protection company. ?Should Scotland decide to cede from the union, it could start the wheels in motion to have its own two digit-ccTLD,? he said in an interview. ?However, 22 out of the possible 26 combinations for a .S something are already in use and only .SF, .SP, .SQ or .SW are left ? .SC is already assigned to the Seychelles.?

The Coding of Online Brand Protection by Philip S. Corwin

Moore's law postulates that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit will double every two years. That law has given us smartphones and other devices with astonishingly diverse capabilities at ever lower costs. However, while it does not encompass online brand infringement, many trademark managers feel that their task is likewise expanding at exponential speed and imposing escalating costs. Potential cybersquatting based in the more than one thousand new gTLDs is only one new source of anxiety. While the jury is still out on the level of harmful cybersquatting and the efficacy of the new Rights Protection Mechanisms (RPMs) for new gTLDs, that ICANN program is hardly the only challenge.

The Lyon Court of Appeal has confirmed a first instance decision which had found that the registration and use of a domain name constituted not only trademark infringement, but also infringement of French copyright law, known as droit d'auteur. Is it Time for a Registration Operations Industry Association?

Since 2001 there have been occasional conversations on technical mailing lists exploring the concept of creating an independent industry association or consortium of domain registration operators. My recent experiences with the evolution of extensions to the Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) have convinced me to look at these suggestions more closely, and I?m now convinced that this is an idea worth exploring.

Smartphones and tablets - What advertisers love, and what they hate, about mobile devices

Marketers' mantra of reaching ?the right person, with the right message, at the right time? has become a lot more achievable in the past few years. Mobile devices, unlike desktop computers, are typically used by only one person, which is a great help to advertisers who want to target specific users. Being closely connected to people?s personal lives and daily habits, the mobile device is the true ?mini-me?. This year, for the first time, Americans will spend more time on mobile devices (not counting talking) than they do on desktop computers. In Britain that tipping point will probably be reached in 2015.

Smartphones: The Corporate Personality Test

It was a big week for smartphones. Apple unveiled two new iPhones ? as well as a new smartwatch, which you can think of as a phone for your wrist. Amazon slashed the price of its new phone, and Microsoft, searching for new applications and content for its own struggling mobile platform, sought to acquire the company behind the blockbuster game Minecraft. What can we glean about these three companies ? and a fourth, Samsung ? from their smartphones? A whole lot about their approach to everything.

Advertising and technology - Surveillance is the advertising industry?s new business model. Privacy needs better protections

The potent combination of three-martini lunches and creative genius in ?Mad Men?, a television show about 1960s Madison Avenue, is a fair representation of the advertising industry?s past. For its future, though, look to a 2002 film, ?Minority Report?, starring Tom Cruise and set in 2054. Mr Cruise, as usual, spends a lot of time on the run. When he dashes past a digital billboard it takes note of his exertions, remarking, ?You could use a Guinness right about now.?
