Cisco: The Internet Needs More Control

Cisco Systems is making an unusual case for itself: The Internet must be subject to a higher amount of control, and big companies will work with governments to make that possible.

Remarks of Assistant Secretary Strickling at The Media Institute - Topics/Subtopics: ICANN, IANA functions, Domain Name System

I want to thank The Media Institute and Dick Wiley in particular for inviting me today. It has been four years since I last spoke here, and it is great to be back again. When I spoke here in 2010, I talked about the evolution of Internet policy making and the limited role of governments in that process. That debate has only become more intense in the last four years. We are committed in the U.S. government to policies that we believe will ensure that the Internet continues to grow and develop in the years to come to provide the opportunities for job creation, innovation and free expression.

US stakes out 'net battleground ahead of ITU meeting

America is once again steeling itself to defend the Internet from the gasp of the ITU. A White House blog post by State Department officials Daniel Sepulveda, Christopher Painter and Scott Busby says the US still believes there are countries and groups that hope to use ITU mandates over the Internet as a means to impose local control over ?content, technologies or services?.

Alert on Domain Name Renewal Phishing Scam

ICANN was recently alerted to a new phishing scam concerning domain registration renewals. The phishing emails use ICANN's branding and logo, and can appear as though ICANN is the sender. However, once registrants click on links within the spoofed email, they are taken to a fake registration renewal site that captures their credit card and personal information.

Be Careful What You Click: Alert of New Fraudulent Domain Renewal Emails by ave Piscitello, ICANN Senior Security Technologist

The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) reported that 125,215 attacks occurred in January through March of this year alone, which reminds us to be suspicious of "too good to be true" offers you receive in email, even if they appear to come from places you interact with or trust, including ICANN.

Next gTLDs: 2016 or 2019? by St?phane Van Gelder

On September 22, 2014, ICANN published an analysis of the review and assessment work that remains to be done before a new round of gTLD applications can be initiated. According to the document, 2016 is the earliest a call for the next lot of applications to operate an Internet suffix could come. To many, a subsequent application window so soon after the 2012 round seems unrealistic.

When Hackers Steal A Web Address, Few Owners Ever Get It Back

For nearly two decades, Michael Lee owned a prized piece of Internet real estate: the website MLA.com. The three letters stood for his graphic design and advertising business, Michael Lee and Associates, but they also represented an unusual investment opportunity. A short or memorable Internet address can be worth thousands or even millions of dollars. Facebook reportedly paid $8.5 million to buy Fb.com in 2010, while Porn.com went for $9.5 million in 2007.
