Because ICANN 51 is our annual general meeting, my colleagues and I have been reflecting on the community's accomplishments of the year. You have done a staggering amount of work this year. The Accelerating Pace of Contention Resolution by Christine Willett

As we prepare for the ICANN 51 meeting, I thought it would be a good idea to address a couple of key points regarding contention set resolution and ICANN-facilitated auctions. Although the ICANN-facilitated auctions have received a fair amount of attention in recent weeks, the vast majority of contention sets are being resolved amongst the applicants, rather than through ICANN-facilitated auctions. Proceeds from the auctions are being segregated until an appropriate use of the funds has been determined by the Board with input from the community.

Building a Better WHOIS for the Individual Registrant by Carlton Samuels

Today, anyone can use WHOIS to identify the organization or person who registered a gTLD domain name, along with their postal address, email address, and telephone number. Publishing this data has long been controversial, creating a system riddled with problems. On one hand, anonymous access to all WHOIS data enables misuse by spammers and criminals and raises concerns about personal privacy. On the other hand, incomplete or false WHOIS data prolongs Internet outages and leaves crime victims with little recourse.

For ICANN, Hotels Are a Community, Gays Are Not

This week, the long-delayed decision from ICANN on the future of the new .gay gTLD was published, and the news was very bad for the LGBTQ community. ICANN is the entity that controls the key bits of the Internet, in particular the domain name system. It is currently in the long drawn-out process of creating hundreds of new gTLDs, including .lawyer, .ibm and .hiv to join stalwarts such as .com and .org.

Phishing with data: URIs

A recent spate of phishing attacks has taken to using the data URI scheme for evil. Supported in most browsers, these special URIs allow the content of a phishing page to be contained entirely within the URI itself, effectively eliminating the need to host the page on a remote web server and adding an additional layer of indirection.

Cyberattacks trigger talk of ?hacking back?

The recent rash of cyberattacks on major U.S. companies has highlighted the scant options available to the victims, who often can do little more than hunker down, endure the bad publicity and harden their defenses in hopes of thwarting the next assault.

How does GoDaddy make money?

Let's be honest here: for a long time, if you asked the majority of people what GoDaddy actually did, they would not have been able to tell you. The truth is that most of them probably only know Go Daddy for their infamous, and usually somewhat inappropriate, Super Bowl commercials, such as the one with that red faced nerd making out with the super model from a few years ago. (Here's a refresher in case you forgot)
