Why Shouldn?t ICANN Terminate Registrars That Have A History of Domain Thefts?

ICANN has terminated domain name registrars accreditation in the past for several issues, many related to non-payment of minimal fees due to ICANN, and record keeping requirements. ICANN has sent out a lot more Notices Of Breach Of the Registrar Accreditation Agreement to registrars for such conduct which got cured by the registrar which basically means the registrars fixed some paperwork and paid past due fees.

Russia Set to Toughen Up Anti-Piracy Laws

Russian lawmakers are set to toughen up anti-piracy laws by the end of the year. Websites that are repeat offenders when it comes to hosting illegally sourced films and TV shows will be shut down. ... Semenov, speaking at a session on fighting piracy, said his association backed moves by the Hollywood studios to persuade intermediaries in the distribution of content online to shun websites that hosted pirated content. These intermediaries included those that processed payments, advertising agencies and their clients that placed ads next to illegal content, domain name registrars, internet access providers, and internet hosting providers, said Trevor Albery, VP of anti-piracy operations for Warner Bros. in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

New gTLDs' Sales Force a Bottleneck? by Alex Tajirian

A number of the new gTLDs have not fared well, as reflected in the dismal domain registrations. Most often we're told the problem is that end users don't know about the gTLDs, or that they don't understand or fully believe in the gTLDs' benefits, or that they demand a tremendous amount of benefits before giving up the familiar for something new (so-called .com-stickiness). My point: Behind all these explanations there may be another, the lack of decent sales force strategies.

Why .CHAT Could Be All That .TEL Wanted to Be and More by Jean Guillon

Almost everyone that has been working in the domain name industry for a while has a story about .TEL. It was introduced in 2005 and went live in 2009 with a flurry of publicity. It was a grand concept aiming to revolutionize the way in which people keep in touch. Unlike traditional domain names, the purpose of a .TEL domain name is to help manage and exchange contact information about people and corporate entities.

Getting gTLDs Into the Marketing Mix by Solomon Amoako

For those of us in the domain space, the hype and fanfare in the years leading up to new gTLDs was loud and pervasive. As early as 2010 or 2011, we saw news of their impending launch propagating through marketing and advertising publications, and even popping up on occasion in mainstream press. Yet somewhere along the way (perhaps in the confusion over procedure, dates and deadlines that seemed to plague the process), we seem to have lost the attention of a group vital to the implementation of the new extensions -- marketers.

Domain Name Security Interests: "Control" Isn?t "Perfection"

As a great deal of value can stem from a debtor's domain name, secured creditors ought to consider how best to protect their interest in such property. One option, which has gained traction in the United States, is to take constructive possession or "control" of the domain name. This means doing whatever is necessary technologically at the time credit is advanced to ensure that no further consent of the debtor would be required, should default occur, to dispose of the collateral. An example would be obtaining and modifying all requisite passwords in the domain name as a condition of providing credit.

5 Common Misconceptions New Registries Make About Domain Revenue by Norbert Grey

It is wonderful to see the floodgates open and see so many new gTLDs launch -- 417 delegated as of October 4th. As registry senior management's focus switches to operational matters post launch, it is now time to consider how the new registries will deal with revenue recognition and its impact on financial reporting. This is primarily the CFO's responsibility, but senior management must be mindful that improper domain revenue accounting will lead to corporate reputational damage.

Los Angeles is a unique place. Love it or hate it ? and there are very few people who sit in the middle ? the one thing you can?t escape about the city is that business rules. And in LA, that business is entertainment.

Tim Berners-Lee, Web Creator, Defends Net Neutrality

Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, has big plans for the future of the Internet. Greater use of online data, faster computers to take care of day-to-day tasks and more collaboration among people around the world are all possible, Mr. Berners-Lee told an audience at a technology conference here on Wednesday. But the British computer scientist warned that this future would happen only if people continued to have unfettered access to the basic infrastructure that powers the Internet.

How Big is That Network? by Geoff Huston

There is a careful policy path to be followed that encourages continued investment and innovation in national telecommunications-related infrastructure and services, while at the time same time avoiding the formation of market distortions and inefficiencies. What helps in this regulatory process is clear information about the state of the industry itself. One of those pieces of information concerns the market scope of the retail Internet Service Provider sector. To put it another way, how ?big? is a particular network? How many customers does it serve? Is its market share increasing or falling?
