UN takeover of internet postponed indefinitely

Efforts to squeeze the United Nations into the throne of the internet have been comprehensively defeated at a key meeting in South Korea. The result raises the possibility that after more than a decade of fighting, the threat of a UN takeover is a thing of the past.

Internet Governance After Busan: Playing the Long Game by Byron Holland

As you might imagine, I've been following the ITU's Plenipotentiary Conference very closely. It was built up to be the great showdown of our time -- the pro-'free and open' Internet in one corner (comprised for the most part of developed and democratic nations), in the other corner a contingent of totalitarian regimes bent on a fractured, censored Internet -- a near battle royale for control of one of the greatest communications tool the world has ever seen.

ITU Plenipotentiary Conference: Internet Governance Diplomacy On Display

The much belaboured takeover of the internet by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union again has not taken place. Instead, ITU member states gathered at the Plenipotentiary Conference in Busan, South Korea, this week rather smoothly passed a set of internet-related resolutions that will, once the closing plenary adopts them, preserve the limited status quo of involvement of the UN organisation responsible for telecommunication and radio frequencies in internet-related public policy issues.

7 questions we're dying to ask the internet's MOST EXCITING BLOKE

It is some irony that the further away the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) walks from trying to run the internet, the more it understands it.

ICANN 52 Meeting to Relocate to Singapore | Marrakech, Morocco Meeting to Take Place in Early 2016

Community concerns that would prevent maximum participation at its next global meeting (ICANN 52, 8-12 February 2015), a critical one given the ongoing discussions around the IANA Stewardship Transition and ICANN Accountability, has prompted ICANN to postpone the meeting in Marrakech, Morocco and to relocate to Singapore on the same dates.

ICANN 51 Los Angeles ? Showcasing Positive Trends and Business Diversity at ICANN Public Meetings by Riccardo Ruffolo, Global Business Engagement Coordinator

A few months ago, after the ICANN 50 meeting in London, we blogged about the impressive participation; almost 4,000 registered individuals and, in particular, private sector attendance over 600. ICANN 51 participation may not have reached the same heights (though 2,857 registered participants was impressive), but business participation numbers remained the same, counting more than 600.

ICANN 52 Relocates To Singapore From Marrakech Over Ebola Fears

Following what ICANN describes as "community concerns that would prevent maximum participation at its next global meeting (ICANN 52, 8-12 February 2015)," which roughly translates as concerns about the spread of the Ebola virus, and a meeting that ICANN describes as "a critical one given the ongoing discussions around the IANA Stewardship Transition and ICANN Accountability," the meeting scheduled to be held in Marrakech, Morocco has been relocated to Singapore on the same dates.

New legal basis for .ch Internet addresses

The SWITCH foundation will stop selling .ch domain names as of the beginning of January 2015 and successively hand over the related client support to its business partners, the registrars. The basis for this change is the new Ordinance on Internet Domains (ODI), which was passed by the Federal Council today. SWITCH will in future focus on operating the .ch domain name directory and on ensuring that the Swiss Internet remains secure and stable.

ch: Higher data rates and new rules for domain names

As part of the universal service, the minimum data rates for broadband internet connections will be doubled. This is one of the consequences of the Federal Council's approval of various amendments to ordinances in the telecommunications sector. These amendments improve transparency and the indication of prices for telecommunications services and value-added services and strengthen the means available to the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) in order to combat frequency spectrum interference. Management of the ".ch" and ".swiss" domains will in future be regulated in an independent Ordinance on Internet Domains (ODI), the text of which has also been approved by the Federal Council. These new provisions will enter into force on 1 January 2015 and 1 July 2015, respectively.

What gTLDs and Patents Forecast for Digital Marketers by Jennifer Wolfe

You might not think that a gTLD and patents have much in common. But, if you look at which new TLDs big companies plan to operate and compare them to recent patent filings by the same companies, you might be able to spot trends in digital media.
