Internet Society Statement on the NETmundial Initiative

The Internet Society Board of Trustees today issued the following statement: Recently, the ?I* Group? was invited to participate in the NETmundial Initiative, which is different from the one-time NETmundial meeting in which we participated in April 2014; we endorsed the outcomes of that meeting. This new and different NETmundial Initiative has been organized by the partnership of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee, ICANN, and the World Economic Forum. This announcement has resulted in considerable discussion and concern amongst various stakeholders regarding the purpose, scope, and nature of the proposed activity or organization.

Internet Society Board of Trustees Welcomes Renewal of Internet Governance Forum Multistakeholder Advisory Group

The ISOC Board of Trustees during its Board meeting 15-16 November addressed recent Internet governance advancements, including the positive momentum of the IGF and the outcome of the ITU Plenipotentiary. Specifically, the Board commended the renewal of the Internet Governance Forum's (IGF) Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG), and reiterated its support for the IGF as a platform for true multistakeholder engagement and concrete action. In addition, the Board issued a resolution expressing its appreciation for the Internet Society's work at the recent ITU Plenipotentiary in Busan.

Internet Control by Governments Isn?t Feasible, Gatekeeper Says

ICANN, the gatekeeper for Web addresses, said government attempts to impose rules on the Internet are doomed to fail as the group seeks to end its own formal ties with U.S. legislators.

Congressional Action on ICANN Accountability by Paul Rosenzweig

... I was, therefore, interested to see the Defending Internet Freedom Act of 2014 introduced by Representative Mike Kelly (R?PA) today. The legislation, is very closely aligned with the recommendations made by me and some colleagues at Heritage in a June paper on required reforms and standards for ICANN transition.

China lays out vision for Web governance

President Xi Jinping called on the world to step up Internet governance in a congratulatory message sent to the opening of China's first World Internet Conference, seen by experts as presenting China's vision for future Internet development amid the nation's rising global influence over cyberspace.

Congress Needs to Remain Engaged on the ICANN Transition by Brett Schaefer, Paul Rosenzweig & James Gattuso

The U.S. NTIA has contracted with ICANN to manage core functions of the Internet since ICANN was established in 1998, including managing policy and technical features of the Internet?s DNS. ... This is a very important issue politically and economically. Nations like Russia have made no secret of their desire to use international organizations such as the ITU, an arm of the United Nations, to assert authority over the Internet as a means for limiting speech that is critical of or damaging to their interests. Even some democratic nations like those in the European Union have supported limiting undesirable speech, or limiting economic freedoms online. If they succeed, a vital medium for speech and political discourse could be crippled.

Internet Society slams online 'UN Security Council' plan, snubs permanent seat offer

The Internet Society has blasted efforts from some quarters to create a "UN Security Council" for the internet ? which would rule over the online world.

The Caravan Has Set Out for a Neo-liberal Capture of Global Governance

A new chapter in global governance has been opened with the launch of the NetMundial Initiative (NMI) at the World Economic Forum. This is the first time that such a corporate-led venue ? although sold as ?multistakeholder?, ?open?, and ?voluntary?, among others ? is positioned as being 'the' mechanism for global governance in a specific sector. In fact it is being openly and explicitly positioned as a direct replacement for existing UN-based governance models, which are routinely the subject of harsh critiques by most of the NMI proponents.

Working Together to Tame the Coming Tsunami by Ashwin Rangan, ICANN Chief Innovation and Information Officer

It is just over eight months since I joined ICANN and several noteworthy events have occurred since. Within a few days of coming on board, the IANA Stewardship Transition was announced. Fadi's efforts to appropriately position Internet Governance and the follow-on work with NETMundial have progressed, leading to some critical hand-overs. And in attending my third (yes, already my third!) ICANN meeting in Los Angeles, I was able to detect an increasing tone of collaboration within the Stakeholder community, something that will require our increased support.

First things first, thank you to all of you who joined us at ICANN 51 in Los Angeles! Winning the Right to .GAY: a Global Call to Action

Within the next two weeks, the governing body of the Internet will rule on who gets to operate the new domain .GAY. I'm concerned that this decision is about to go badly for LGBT people. On this point and throughout ICANN's exhaustive evaluation, Scott and dotgay earned nearly perfect scores. The problem was a question called community nexus, which asks whether an applicant really speaks for the community it claims to represent. How, ICANN's evaluators asked, could .GAY speak for an unknown and unknowable worldwide population of perhaps 70 million, most of whom are not able or willing to stand up and be visible? And how could that single word gay serve as a gathering place for lesbians, transgender people, friends and allies, and millions of people yet to come?

UDRP With 1,000+ Domain Names is a Milestone for WIPO

The World Intellectual Property Organization reported that it received its 30,000th UDRP filing yesterday, and it is a fairly interesting UDRP given the sheer number of domain names that are a part of it. Apparently, Ebay was the company that filed this milestone UDRP, and the case involves well over 1,000 domain names (there were 1,153 domain names in total included in this filing).

Following Macaulay Culkin hoax, research examines media gTLD registration patterns

A brand-hijacked website using the new gTLD string ?.website? went viral last week with a hoax news report about the ?death of Macaulay Culkin?. The hoax spread, in part, because of the authentic-looking ?msnbc.website? domain, which convinced over 6 million users to share the fake article across a seven-day span.

Anti-Cybersquatting Lessons from IP Strategy by Alex Tajirian

The post reconsiders a cooperative solution to cybersquatting that I proposed in 2007. I also draw on examples of success and failure of legal actions to protect intellectual property (IP) licensing. Cybersquatting has gone unabated with the new gTLDs despite the introduction of new protection instruments such as the Trademark Cleaning House (TMCH) database and the availability of Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS) services, as well as declarations by registries of their intentions to block unauthorized registrations.

The Economics of Transition to IPv6

This report makes the case that IPv6 represents an example of a platform; within the context of IPv6, the sides of the platform are Internet service providers, backbone providers, device manufacturers, content providers, and so forth. The net benefits to adopting the new platform are not distributed equally across sides.

Iran to fully employ IPv6 in the next four years

No one could have predicted the growth of the internet and when the commercial internet was in its infancy, the pool of around 4 billion IPv4 addresses seemed huge.

Legal Brand Marketing Lands Best Law-Related .co.com Domains in Win-Win Deal with Registry

It is widely believed that the success of new registry operators rests on end user adoption and development in their namespace. That's why operators of the .co.com registry, who created new namespace by sub-domaining a premier .com domain, are happy about a deal they announced with Legal Brand Marketing (LBM) today.

Canadian Web Host Files Lawsuit Against Police who Seized its Equipment in Citadel Botnet Investigation

Vancouver web host White Falcon Communications and its owner Dmitri Glazyrin have filed a lawsuit against the Attorney General of Canada and two Canadian police for seized company servers and equipment in 2013. The seizure resulted from a US-led investigation into Citadel botnets, and the company alleges in the suit that the seizure effectively destroyed its business.

The big news in the domain aftermarket this week is the $1,261,000 sale of Power.com that we told you about in a Lowdown post Tuesday (Nov. 11). George Kirikos uncovered the private transaction while looking through a 3rd quarter SEC filing made by the buyer, Power Integrations, a large Silicon Valley company that purchased the domain as an upgrade to their present address, PowerInt.com. The deal was co-brokered by Scott Smith and WebsiteProperties.com.
