Internet Governance: A Hearing Planned and a Resolution Introduced

In case you missed it, Sen. John Thune laid out out his to-do list on tech policy issues on Wednesday at the American Enterprise Institute and among the issues he mentioned was Internet governance.

15 Years On, President Clinton's 5 Principles for Internet Policy Remain the Perfect Paradigm

What principles should guide Internet policy? Fifteen years ago, the Clinton Administration proposed a paradigm for how cyberspace should be governed that remains the most succinct articulation of a pro-liberty, market-oriented vision for cyberspace ever penned. It recommended that we rely on civil society, contractual negotiations, voluntary agreements, and ongoing marketplace experiments to solve information age problems. In essence, they were recommending a high-tech Hippocratic oath: First, do no harm (to the Internet).

Tracking the Future of the New gTLD Program by Karen Lentz

The New gTLD Program, one of the most important developments in the Internet space in recent years, continues to gain momentum: over 400 new gTLDs have been introduced so far, and still counting. The Program represents significant work by the ICANN community, and we continue to hear from more people interested in learning about these opportunities and how to participate.

The New Africa TLD: An African Initiative in Ensuring Africa's Rightful Place on the Global Network by Eddie Hurter & Tana Pistorius [Potchefstroom Electronic Law Journal]

Abstract: The new gTLD programme of ICANN is the single most important development since the privatisation of the DNS in 1998. The management of the Domain Name System (DNS) has developed from a modest undertaking to its current explosive expansion through the new gTLD programme. Africa has boldly entered the arena through the delegation of the .Africa gTLD.

Will dot-bank links make banking safer?

Hacking attacks at major companies like Target and JPMorgan Chase have brought worries over Web security to the forefront. And while nothing is foolproof, the banking industry is trying to make it more secure and less confusing for consumers by eventually utilizing the domain "dot-bank," a generic domain that ICANN is set to release in mid-2015.

The Internet of Dangerous Things

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks designed to silence end users and sideline Web sites grew with alarming frequency and size last year, according to new data released this week. Those findings dovetail quite closely with the attack patterns seen against this Web site over the past year.

?IT systems must become inherently more secure?

Those responsible for IT security are constantly being confronted with new challenges: On the one hand, they should react quickly to new technological trends and developments, and on the other hand, they need different concepts for new attack scenarios. Oliver Dehning, Leader of the eco Competence Group Security, offers some insight into the background and an outlook for the next Competece Group meeting.

What to Do If You Are (or Don?t Want to Be) Hacked

In light of the many high profile cyber-attacks on businesses this past year, employers should assess their vulnerability relative to data breaches and take steps to protect themselves from hackers as well as more innocuous business practices that could result in data breaches.

IPv6 Security Myth #3: No IPv6 NAT Means Less Security by Chris Grundemann

We're back again with part 3 in this 10 part series that seeks to bust 10 of the most common IPv6 security myths. Today's myth is a doozy. This is the only myth on our list that I have seen folks raise their voices over. For whatever reason, Network Address Translation (NAT) seems to be a polarizing force in the networking world. It also plays a role in differentiating IPv4 from IPv6.

< <http://www.circleid.com/posts/20150129_ipv6_security_myth_3_no_ipv6_nat_means_less_security/> http://www.circleid.com/posts/20150129_ipv6_security_myth_3_no_ipv6_nat_means_less_security/>

Bracing the Network for change in 2015 ... 4. Internet Protocol Version 6 is inevitable, so plan ahead

With IPv4 still widely used, IT Pros have little urgency in deploying IPv6. However, with a transition to IPv6 inevitable and essential, there's no reason why we shouldn't be planning for it now. This sort of foresight will mean a much smoother transition when the change does occur, and ultimately greater security and productivity benefits down the track.
