Obama's Internet Words Don't Match His Actions

... In the past I?ve reported my concerns about the future of the Internet under the Obama administration. If you believe the Internet is one of mankind?s greatest inventions, if you like its current low barrier to entry for personal and professional benefit, if you?re responsible for the future of a business, then you should share my concerns. ... 1. President Obama treats the Internet as a political and diplomatic bargaining tool. After the U.S. government was embarrassed by Edward Snowden?s theft of secrets, the President announced intentions to relinquish U.S. control of Internet governance to a ?global, multi-stakeholder community,? even though there was time left on the contract with ICANN.

Two-thirds done: The IANA transition in Singapore by Milton Mueller

The Singapore ICANN meeting (ICANN #52) is an inflection point in the IANA stewardship transition. The numbers and protocols processes have proceeded relatively smoothly, though not without minor hiccups, and reasonable proposals have been developed and are being reviewed. The names process, predictably, is taking longer.

Return to Singapore: From Chili Crabs to Names, Numbers and Protocol Parameters by Konstantinos Komaitis

Almost a year ago, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced its intent to transition key Internet domain name functions to the global multistakeholder community. The process was officially kicked off at the ICANN 49 meeting. That was March 2014. And the place? Singapore. Fast-forward a year later and we are again on our way to Singapore for an ICANN meeting.

Joining the Global Discussion at ICANN 52: Monthly Update from Theresa Swineheart

With ICANN's 52nd Public Meeting taking place this week in Singapore, I wanted to highlight the numerous opportunities to get involved in the conversation on the IANA Stewardship Transition and Enhancing ICANN Accountability processes. To date, the community has logged more than 90 public calls or meetings, over 5,200 working hours and some 10,000 email exchanges during the various stages of proposal development necessary to transition the stewardship of the IANA functions to the multistakeholder community.

Countdown to ICANN 52: Join Us for the SO/AC High Interest Topic Panel by David Olive

Next week, the ICANN community will convene in Singapore for ICANN 52. The meeting comes at an important time - particularly regarding the efforts focused on the transition of the IANA stewardship function and the work to enhance and define ICANN?s accountability as an organization. It is in that latter context that the leaders of the Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees (SO-AC) will gather on Monday 8 February from 14:00-15:15 local time (0600?0715 UTC) in the Padang Room for their now traditional SO/AC High-Interest Topic Panel.

gTLDs as a catalyst for creating a better digital experience by Jennifer Wolfe

While many remain skeptical about the value of the gTLD, there?s one thing most can agree on. It is a perfect catalyst to foster innovative thinking about the digital experience. As many brands are moving through the contracting process, they are likely beginning to think about how to use the gTLD.

Four TLDs to Watch in 2015 by Stuart Lawley

The Internet's expansion is well underway. Just three years ago, nearly every web address ended in either .com, .net, .gov, or .edu. Fast forward to today where the number of Internet suffixes, or TLDs, is soon to exceed one thousand. In an instant, the Internet went from overcrowded to potential overexpansion. The question brand owners are asking themselves is -- which TLDs are worth claiming a web address on? And what tools are out there to help monitor domain name registrations in these new TLDs?

The Carrot and the Stick by George Michaelson

Some time ago at the APNIC 38 NIR SIG, it was great to hear from representatives of all seven National Internet Registries (NIRs) providing updates on activities in their economies. You can revisit the entire session here but there were two interesting things I thought were worth highlighting.

Say it with a domain name

In less than two weeks the retailers will get another nice boost in takings as the world goes Valentine?s Day crazy. Two years ago it was reported that us Brits spent close to ?1 billion on gifts for our loved ones, a figure that will undoubtedly grow this year. In the US the situation is even crazier where this week the National Retail Federation (NRF) predicted that over $700 million will be spent just on pets for Valentine?s Day.

State of the Internet Metrics: What Do They Mean?

Nearly two years ago, we published a blog post titled "Clarifying State of the Internet Report Metrics", and it has served as a great reference for those interested in finding out more about the metrics published within the State of the Internet Report. However, as the report has evolved over the last several years, we thought it would be worth publishing an update to clarify existing metrics and review new ones, with the goal of minimizing confusion about, or misinterpretation of, terms and/or data within the report.

Domain Names Overcoming Awareness Gap in Mainstream Media by Jothan Frakes

One of the challenges faced by registries that are launching is that there is a large lack awareness of the new options being available -- to browse as internet users or to register a domain. In a recent survey conducted by the Domain Name Association, (TheDNA) (of which I am a member), people of varying aptitude and experience from the general population of 10 different countries were provided a series of questions about their browsing habits.
