Beijing Touts ?Cyber-Sovereignty? In Internet Governance: Global Technology Firms Could Mine Silver Lining by Scott Livingston

It has been a difficult few weeks for global technology companies operating in China. Chinese officials strengthened the Internet firewall by blocking the use of virtual private networks (VPNs), reasserted demands that web users register their real names, and issued a new regulation requiring enhanced scrutiny of imported IT products in the financial industry. In response, a consortium of 17 trade groups wrote U.S. trade officials urging them to resist China?s new cybersecurity policies.

Stakeholders Continue Historic Work on Internet DNS Transition at ICANN Singapore Meeting by Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information and NTIA Administrator Lawrence E. Strickling

U.S. Senate Declares ?Internet Governance Awareness Week? Coinciding with ICANN 52 Singapore

ICANN 52 reflection by Jordan Carter

It?s a week now since the end of ICANN?s 52nd public meeting in Singapore, held 8-12 February. I?ve had a chance to reflect on the week and think about what happened. My main focus, as outlined in a note to InternetNZ members before travelling to the meeting, was on the intertwined issues of the transition of stewardship of the Internet?s domain name system from the United States Government to the global Internet community, and the improvements to ICANN?s accountability that would be required to allow this transition to happen.

52nd ICANN Meeting: Discussion on IANA and the Administration of the Internet Determine the Agenda in Singapore

Who will take on the supervision of the IANA from September 2015? This question is currently dominating all international discussions on Internet Governance and was also a central topic at the 52nd ICANN Meeting, which took place from 8-12 February in Singapore. Representing eco ? the Association of the German Internet Industry were eco Chairman of the Board Prof. Michael Rotert and Director of Policy and Law Oliver S?me, along with Thomas Rickert and Lars Steffen from eco Business Development. eco used the platform of the meeting above all to consult on national guidelines and recommendations for action for the transition of the IANA Stewardship. The objective is to bring a collective German position into the international negotiation process.

In Battle for Names, it's Country Vs. Company [VoA]

... This dispute has emerged in the digital world, where companies like Amazon are staking claims on the uncharted territory of website names with geographic terms. Before, websites would just use gTLDs like .com or .org. But in 2012, ICANN opened the floodgates by letting people apply for all manner of website domains -- including .amazon.

Many notable observations were made, including a rise in the average size of DDoS attacks against our customers; the most common attack vector continued to be User Datagram Protocol (UDP) amplification attacks leveraging Network Time Protocol (NTP), while Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP) also continued to be exploited.
