The Stakeholder Journey - Los Angeles to Singapore and Beyond by Christoper Mondini, VP for Business Engagement

Since ICANN 51 in Los Angeles, a number of ICANN staff and community leaders have been intensely focused on the question of outreach, and specifically how to convert the newly aware ICANN observers into volunteers. During ICANN's recent meeting in Singapore, I approached many attendees, from newcomers to veterans, activists to observers, to ask what brings them to ICANN and how to encourage more active participation.

More companies are going 'Back to the Future' with .com domain names

... Last year, I wrote this post and started keeping tabs on the ever-growing list of companies that tried an alternative generic gTLD, skewing their internet "space-time continuum" in the process before eventually switching back to a .com domain to get things back to normal. One might have argued that these companies were simply the exception and not the norm, but this trend isn't showing any signs of slowing down. Since my last post on this topic in December, a number of additional companies had their own Marty McFly moment and made the switch to .com after having tried an alternative domain. Here are some examples:

.co.com: 10k Domains at 1 Year Anniversary

Ken Hansen from the .co.com registry shared some news with me that I want to share with you. The .co.com registry recently celebrated its one year anniversary, and there are now more than 10,000 .co.com domain names registered. .co.com domain names retail for anywhere from $20 ? $40, and some registrars have a higher renewal cost. The registry has also sold many domain names at a premium cost, such as Mobile.co.com for $25,000.

Will Hashtags Take Over the Internet? A look at what new domain names and hashtags have in common by Jennifer Wolfe

Check out your Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook feed; flip through a magazine or watch a commercial on television. You?ll likely find them filled with hashtags about what we like, what we want, what we think, or even just where we are: #onaplane or #springbreak2015. We use hashtags now to make sense of our digital world and help us find topics or associate with the latest trends in our social spheres. We use hashtags for the mundane, like #eatingicecream, to create movements like #selfie, or to provoke a response like #breaktheinternet. Newscasters use hashtags to drive conversations about their stories. Celebrities use hashtags to drive followers and brand themselves and their products.

The Internet doesn?t speak English only: Here?s why you should care about Internationalized Domain Names

With over 8 Arabic speaking countries in Africa alone, it will be a great disservice to ourselves not to consider this great percentage of the population in our Internet ecosystem. TMCH expects uptick in brand engagement when contended strings go live

The Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) officially opened for business in March 2013, and one of the narratives to date has centred on the level of trademark registrations. At the end of January, 34,400 marks from 104 countries had been submitted to the TMCH yet the pace of registrations hasn?t really kept up with initial expectations. To discuss why, and how, the TMCH is itself taking the message to brand owners, we spoke to sales and marketing manager Peter Van De Weille.

One Domain Name Is Never Enough

When starting a new business, most entrepreneurs will reserve a domain name and URL for their new venture?and then move on to printing business cards. Not Dan Boaz, Founder and President of AirFreight.com. Dan has amassed over 1,000 domains related to transportation, and he is working on a very deliberate strategy to dominate the shipping industry by directing web traffic to his expedited shipping companies.

Why reading and writing on paper can be better for your brain

... Reading, unlike speaking, is a young activity in evolutionary terms. Humans have been speaking in some form for hundreds of thousands of years; we are born with the ability to acquire speech etched into our neurones. The earliest writing, however, emerged only 6,000 years ago, and every act of reading remains a version of what my son is learning: identifying the special species of physical objects known as letters and words, using much the same neural circuits as we use to identify trees, cars, animals and telephone boxes.

Why People Probably Won't Pay to Keep Their Web History Secret

AT&T is conducting an experiment in how much money Americans will pay for privacy. If consumers in Kansas are willing to pay an extra $30 per month for super-fast fiber-optic Internet access, the telecom giant won?t track their online browsing for targeted ads. It turns out, most people opt for the cheaper service, according to AT&T.

Tech and TPP - Flying in the dark

When the Trade Minister?s office leaked details to The Australian last week of sugar being added to the Trans Pacific Partnership negotiations, the rest of Australia was understandably nervous. ... For the tech industry ? and for consumers of content ? the TPP concerns relate to the possibility of a dramatic re-write of intellectual property laws being forced under the agreement. Certainly this is the concern that Labor?s trade spokesman Penny Wong has been flagging.
