Stakeholder Proposals to Come Together at ICANN Meeting in Argentina by
Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information and NTIA
Administrator Lawrence E. Strickling

Next week, hundreds of members of the Internet stakeholder community will
attend ICANN's 53rd meeting in Argentina. As I head to Buenos Aires, one of
NTIA?s top priorities continues to be the transition of NTIA?s role related
to the Internet Domain Name System. Since we announced the IANA stewardship
transition in March 2014, the response of the stakeholder community has been
remarkable and inspiring. I thank everyone for their hard work.

Raising Security Awareness, One Security Term at a Time by Dave Piscitello |

The Internet has finally, and in so many ways, become an integral part of
our every day lives. As familiar as we are with it, however, we still need
to understand how best to navigate our way in this vast digital territory

ourselves, our families and workplaces, and increasingly, all of our
sensitive information from Internet attacks.

Dot Brands Should Not Rush to Market, but Build Effective Strategies First
by Jennifer Wolfe

Brands applied for their new gTLDs to protect their brand and ensure they
didn't miss an important new opportunity, but few had a clear business case
for how they would use the gTLD platform when they applied. As brands
approach the July 29th contracting deadline, the inevitable question is
arising: "What do we do with this?"

Is Sharing the Answer to .BRAND TLD Disputes? by Dan Svantesson

In opening up for the .BRAND TLD, ICANN has artificially created a scarce
resource of great commercial value. Indeed, the values of the .BRAND TLDs
may be astronomical due to the investments made by the companies that own
the trademarks represented in the .BRAND TLD. While the above is interesting
in its own right, I will here focus specifically on how we deal with
situations where more than one company has a legitimate trademark interest
in a particular .BRAND TLD.

As the leading consulting firm to the Domain Name industry, we work with
many of the existing gTLDs, ccTLDs and new gTLDs. During our engagements we
do a lot of listening (as well as work) and this gives us a unique

hearing feedback from many leading registries and registrars about their
need for more dynamic pricing and promotions and their concern that there
may not be enough flexibility in their billing systems to speedily handle
their promotion plans.

Why Mass Surveillance Violates International Law

Around the world repressive governments are trying to stop Internet users
from either posting anonymously or using encryption to communicate securely.
Russia requires bloggers with more than 3,000 visitors to register with the
state and identify themselves; pseudonyms are outlawed in Vietnam; Ecuador
requires commenters on websites to use their real name; Pakistan?s
government must grant approval for the use of encryption; and Ethiopia
convicted members of the dissident blogging collective Zone 9 on terrorism
charges based in part on participation in an online encryption workshop.
