A Commerce Department official told members of the House Energy and Commerce
Communications and Technology Subcommittee on July 8 that an IANA contract
will need to be extended at least through July 2016 to allow time for
oversight.

ICANN running the global internet? It's gonna be OK, it's gonna be OK, US
Congress told

US Congress was soothed Wednesday morning over the fundamental shift of the
IANA contract, which oversees the running of the global internet, from the
US government to non-profit domain overlord ICANN, but significant questions
remain.

End of US oversight role 'strengthens' Internet [AFP]

The US government's stepping away from a key oversight role of the Internet
will strengthen its governance and ease political pressures, the top

The United States wants to push back the date it gives up symbolic control
of the Internet

The United States will likely need to retain its historical oversight
authority over the Internet's naming and addressing system for a little
longer, a delay that will keep the U.S. government from moving ahead with a
plan to give up some of its legacy powers over the Web.

Never Invited, but Always Present by John Berard

Listening today to the U.S. Congress' House of Representatives Subcommittee
on Communications and Technology hearing on ICANN governance reminded me
just how often Vox Populi Registry, the company bringing dotSucks names to
the Internet, is a guest at parties to which it has never been invited.
Sometimes, like today, we are able to view it all from a distance and mostly
we have refrained from trying to correct every misstatement or argue each
odd point.

The Middle East Strategy: Two Years Later by Fahd A. Batayneh - Coordinator,
Global Stakeholder Engagement, Middle East

Over two years ago, when the members of the Middle East Strategy Working
Group (MESWG) developed the strategy document, there was consensus that the
findings of the document be implemented on annual basis as three separate
Implementation Plans. At the same time, and in order to evaluate the
progress of the strategy and its impact on the regional Internet community,
it was agreed that annual reviews are to be conducted and shared with the
regional community at-large.

Powerful Coalition Letter Highlights Danger of ICANN's New Domain
Registration Proposal

EFF has joined 46 organizations and 105 individuals to oppose a new domain
registration proposal in front of ICANN. From Academy Award-winning
documentary film director Laura Poitras to the National Council of Women's
Organizations to Chayn, an organization that works to combat domestic
violence in Pakistan, the vast array of organizations and individuals signed
on to this letter reflects just how misguided this proposal is. We hope
ICANN will reject the flawed proposal, which comes from a smaller ICANN
Working Group, especially in light of this unified opposition.
