Powerful Coalition Letter Highlights Danger of ICANN?s New Domain Registration Proposal

EFF has joined 46 organizations and 105 individuals to oppose a new domain registration proposal in front of ICANN. From Academy Award-winning documentary film director Laura Poitras to the National Council of Women's Organizations to Chayn, an organization that works to combat domestic violence in Pakistan, the vast array of organizations and individuals signed on to this letter reflects just how misguided this proposal is. We hope ICANN will reject the flawed proposal, which comes from a smaller ICANN Working Group, especially in light of this unified opposition.

IP Justice Comments on Imposition of Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS) .Cat and .Pro and Consumers by ICANN

IP Justice opposes this illegitimate attempt to circumvent proper policy development process in the creation and imposition of a new gTLD policy. Toward a Balanced ICANN Accreditation Program for Privacy and Proxy Service Providers by Alex Deacon

For the past two years a diverse group of stakeholders from the ICANN community, including myself, has been working hard to come to a consensus on a set of recommendations related to development and implementation of an ICANN accreditation program for privacy & proxy service providers. The result of this effort will replace the interim specification defined in the 2013 Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA) that is due to expire at the end of 2016.

Celebrating 30 Years of .ORG

Thirty years is a long time when it comes to technology, and even longer for the internet. And today .org celebrates its 30th birthday. It was the year the domain name system came into being while some of the other notable events in 1985 were the UK's first mobile/cellular network was launched by Vodafone, Ronald Reagan was sworn in for his second term as US president and Neighbours began its long run on television. It was also the year in which the very first .org domain - mitre.org - was born.

Introducing the Verisign DNS Firewall

Defending against cyber threats is not only critical, but increasingly difficult and expensive. Just a quick glance at today?s news headlines and it is clear that these threats present numerous challenges to Internet users and the organizations that both serve and employ them. For example, in 2014, McAfee Labs observed a 75 percent year-over-year increase in new malware equating to 387 new threats per minute. Further, the Ponemon Institute estimates the average data breach costs large organizations $3.8 million per event.

Online Scams May Be Bad News For Charity and CSR Marketing, But New gTLDs Offer One Solution

Over the last few years, consumers have come to expect brands to support social and environmental causes with their products, services, donations, and/or volunteer work. However, the upsurge in Internet scams ? not just phishing scams, but seemingly legitimate organizations swindling people out of their hard-earned money ? might still make people to think twice about engaging with online charities or corporate social responsibility (CSR) marketing campaigns unless they, the consumers, can be assured that the content they are viewing is legitimate.

.Coms Retake the Driver's Seat - They Dominate This Week's Chart With a $150,000 Sale Leading the Charge

After seeing new gTLDs take the top spot on our all extension Top 20 Sales Chart for the last two weeks in a row, the long dominant .coms re-asserted themselves this week, sweeping 16 of the 21 chart entries including the first three in a row (the extra spot resulted from a tie for the final opening). With three places going to non .com gTLDs (of the old variety - .net, .org and .info) and the other two to ccTLDs, the new G's went away empty handed this time out.

Redefining privacy and anonymity through social networking affordances by Angela M. Cirucci

Abstract: Social networking sites allow people to create, broadcast, and interpret the self in new and evolving ways. While early online social media studies praised the Internet for providing an anonymous space in which to experiment with identity, more recent research suggests that social networking sites have become not anonymous, as they compel users to perform identity in new ways.

TPP: Big Tech Does Not Speak for the Internet

Too often, media and policymakers take seriously the claim of government officials that secret trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) promote and protect ?Internet freedom,? even though the traditional guardians of Internet freedom?users and innovators who rely on it?have said precisely the opposite. Unfortunately, that?s likely because some large tech companies have joined the negotiations and have implicitly given these deals their blessing.

au: If the US can offer TPP transparency, so can we

After stakeholders in the US were allowed to view the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiating text, Australia should follow suit. If our businesses can have meaningful input then it is far more likely the deal will be a success, writes Kate Carnell.
