ICANN 53 - Guaranteeing Accountability in Internet Governance by J. Scott Evans

I recently attended ICANN's 53rd meeting in Buenos Aires to further discuss the IANA transition process. During the meeting, public and private Internet stakeholders made important strides on a transition timeline, accountability planning and future management of the Internet that supports global creativity and innovation.

Enhancing Predictability and Transparency: Policy Implementation Webpage and Calendar Now Live by Cyrus Namazi

The policies that apply to gTLDs are developed through the GNSO policy development process, which often represents several months of work, consideration, and discussion in the stakeholder community. When a new policy completes that process and is approved by the ICANN Board of Directors, the ICANN staff then puts those policy recommendations into practice ? what is referred to as "policy implementation."

New gTLDs Are Great for Pump-and-Dumps, Phishes and More... by Mark Jeftovic

Yesterday, egregious financial truth-tellers (a client of ours at easyDNS) ZeroHedge broke the news that parties unknown, engineered what looks to be a textbook "pump-and-dump" on Twitter's stock by putting up a fake "Bloomberg Financial News" site on the domain bloomberg.market and proceeded to run a story on it about Twitter being acquired. Understanding the Threat Landscape: Basic Methodologies for Tracking Attack Campaigns

The indicators of compromise (IOCs) outlined in my last blog post can be used as a baseline for developing intrusion sets and tracking attack campaigns and threat actors. When launching an attack, threat actors use a variety of vectors and infrastructure, which Verisign iDefense analysts - as well as analysts across the cybersecurity community - correlate to group attacks, tracking actors and determining attack methods. Tracking and analyzing how an adversary targets your organization, and developing insight into their tactics, capabilities and intent, contribute to an organization?s effective risk mitigation strategy. Campaign analysis allows an organization to focus its monitoring, incident response procedures, training efforts and internal security controls more effectively on those assets and personnel that a threat actor will likely target for compromise.

Increasing DNSSEC Adoption - What if We Put DNSSEC Provision in the Hands of Registries? by Jacques Latour

There has been a lot of criticism about the worthiness of DNSSEC. Low adoption rates and resistance and reluctance by Registrars to take on the perceived burden of signing domains and passing-on cryptographic material are at the crux of the criticism. I'm a believer in DNSSEC as a unique and worthwhile security protocol and as a new platform for innovation. It's the reason I've long advocated for and continue to work toward a new model of DNSSEC provisioning.

Another day, another hack. It seems like every time we read the news, we hear of another mega breach compromising the records of millions of people. In early 2014, it was eBay that was targeted, leading to the compromise of all 145 million active account holders. In 2015, it was the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, with initial estimates placing the number of compromised records at more than four million and later estimates indicating that upwards of 18 to 21.5 million current and former federal government employees could have been affected. China Domain Name Scams Rising

Every so often there seems to be an uptick in what I call the China domain name scam. Now is one of those times. IPv4 Exhaustion, 5 Implications for Africa Running out Last by Mukom Akong Tamon

I spend most of my time teaching engineers in different countries how to plan and deploy IPv6 networks. Over the last two years, I have been speaking more and more to non-engineers. These are either technology executives who sense that they need to do something about this "IPv6" thing, or government IT leaders who want to understand what the problem is and more importantly, what they could do. The most impactful part of these these exchanges is when I get these managers to understand the implications of IPv4 address exhaustion to their organisations.

Changes to the Way We Measure IPv6

For some years at APNIC Labs we have been conducting measurement experiments concerning the extent of use of IPv6 using a technique of embedding the measurements within the advertisement using Adobe Flash. The use of Adobe Flash as a scripting tool for the measurement system behind the online advertisement delivery system has always been somewhat of a compromise, in that we?ve been aware that not all systems support Flash, but at the time HTML5 was still in its early days. In the middle of June we added a second advertising stream using HTML5 as the scripting language for the Ad to augment the existing Flash stream, and in this article we?ll look at the changes this has meant to the data concerning the level of deployment of IPv6 as a result.

Revisiting Apple and IPv6

A few weeks ago I wrote about Apple's IPv6 announcements at the Apple Developers Conference. While I thought that in IPv6 terms Apple gets it, the story was not complete and there were a number of aspects of Apple's systems that were not quite there with IPv6. So I gave them a 7/10 for their IPv6 efforts. Time to reassess that score in the light of a few recent posts from Apple.

Mike Mann ? DNW Podcast #41

My guest today is Mike Mann. Mike Mann founded BuyDomains, built it up to 500,000 domain names, and then sold it to investors. Now he?s at it again with DomainMarket.com. Mike explains how he used technology to find the best domain names and beat competitors in expired domain name auctions. In addition to using ?robots? to win auctions, he has also been called the ?human robot?.
