The Importance of the L-Root in the DNS World by Terry Manderson

Right now, many people are focused on the important work related to the IANA
Stewardship Transition, and rightly so! Well, we're going to shift gears for
a moment to take a short journey into the exciting world of Internet
technology. In fact, why not grab a coffee, put your feet up and join me in
thinking about some of the underlying infrastructure that keeps the Internet
running. Ready? Great!

EFF to ICANN: Privacy Must be Purposeful-Not an Afterthought

The working group at ICANN that has been tasked with designing a new domain
registration database can't seem to wrap its head around why privacy matters
when it comes to domain registration services. ICANN's Expert Working Group
on gTLD Registration Directory Services (EWG) issued a Preliminary Issue
Report on Next-Generation gTLD Registration Directory Services to Replace
WHOIS in July, and EFF has submitted comments.

made, browsers will automatically redirect to HTTPS when calling up the

Google Chose .XYZ Over .Com for Alphabet. Is .Com Irrelevant?

Last month, in a surprise move, Google became Alphabet. Now, this is the
Internet's biggest brand and the largest Internet-focused company. You would
assume that their homepage would be Alphabet.com, right? Wrong. Google, or
Alphabet, doesn't think the .com is essential any more and set its global
domain at abc.xyz.

New domains: growth point or reason for disappointment?

New gTLDs became the main subject of the first working day in TLDCON 2015.
There are almost 7 million registered names in all new gTLDs today. In
total, there are slightly less than 700 delegated domains, and registration
is open in more than a half of them. 100,000 registration mark was overcome
by 10 domains.

Can We Stop IP Spoofing? A New Whitepaper Explores the Issues by Andrei

In March 2013, Spamhaus was hit by a significant DDoS attack that made its

hundreds of millions of packets hitting network equipment on their way. In
Q1 2015, Arbor Networks reported a 334Gbps attack targeting a network
operator Asia. In the same quarter they also saw 25 attacks larger than
100Gbps globally. What is really frightening about this is that such attacks
were relatively easy to mount.

Hot Summer Domain Sales Pace Slowed a Bit This Week Though Non .Coms

The past week was a relatively slow one for a domain aftermarket that has
been enjoying a hot summer. Only nine reported sales reached five figures
and none broke the six-figure barrier. That left the door open for non .com
domains to enjoy another solid week. After taking 12 of 20 entries last week
they filled nine more slots on this week's all extension Top 20 Sales Chart.
Five of those went to ccTLDs and four to non .com gTLDs. Specifics on those
