The Myth of US Government ?Protection? of the Open Internet by Milton Mueller

Nationalist Republicans who want to retain governmental control of ICANN have based their argument on a false premise. To call it a false premise, in fact, is to be polite. It would be more accurate to call it a rhetorical ploy, what Washington calls ?spin.? This ?spin? is invisible to most participants in the debate because few of them have the detailed understanding of the IANA functions, ICANN?s history and the facts about the U.S. role required to see through the spin.

Senate Oversight Hearing Explores "Test Drive" of IANA Transition by Philip S. Corwin

G7 Ise-Shima Leaders? Declaration - G7 Ise-Shima Summit, 26-27 May 2016

Preamble: We, the leaders of the G7, met in Ise-Shima on 26 and 27 May 2016 to address major global economic and political challenges. The rise of violent extremism, terrorist attacks and other challenges, pose serious threat to the existing rule based international order, as well as to common values and principles for all humanity. ... yber: We strongly support an accessible, open, interoperable, reliable and secure cyberspace as one essential foundation for economic growth and prosperity. We promote digital adoption for improved quality of life, by bridging digital divides, enabling innovative business models and affordable universal and high quality access to Information and Communication Technologies as well as enhancing digital literacy. We endorse the G7 Principles and Actions on Cyber and commit to take decisive actions.

The Art Market: Bust-up with a hushed-up ending [registration]

... In the internet world there are hundreds of millions of domain names, but far fewer TLDs, which can be the ubiquitous ?.com? or country codes (?.uk?), or even the more bizarre ? ?.plumbing?, ?.blackfriday? and ?.cat? all exist, for example. The online company Artsy was initially called Art.sy ? using the Syrian domain name ? until the civil war there forced a change of branding. Now the highly desirable new TLD ?.art? is being launched by a UK-based group founded by Russian venture capitalist Ulvi Kasimov, who has been seeking ways to use digital technology in the art market.

Who Rules this Domain? TLDs Explained

In 2012, ICANN decided that the number of TLDs available for use by the public needed to be broadened. They opened a window of several months for anyone who was willing to pay ($185,000) to apply to register the TLD of their choice and hence claim their own little corner of the Internet. This year, the application process for all 1900 of the first wave of applications will be complete, and the last of around 1300 new TLDs (about 600 applications went belly up for various reasons) will be made available for use and, in many cases, for sale to the general public.

At an event last night we were chatting about the current state of the security market where a glut of new security vendors have entered over the past five years, funded aggressively by venture capital and firms that all wanted ?in and to go big? on Cyber. Many of these vendors are in the ?newer? categories of advanced threat detection promising to help organizations find the stealthy and most damaging attacks more effectively than ?legacy? approaches such as firewalls, SIEM and endpoint protection. Money was easily accessible, spending fast to grow fast was the norm. It many ways it has been Cyber 1999.

DNS Privacy by Geoff Huston

The DNS is normally a relatively open protocol that smears its data (which is your data and mine too!) far and wide. Little wonder that the DNS is used in many ways, not just as a mundane name resolution protocol, but as a data channel for surveillance and as a common means of implementing various forms of content access control. But all this is poised to change. Now that the Snowden files have sensitized us to the level of such activities, we have become acutely aware that many of our tools are just way too trusting, way too chatty, and way too easily subverted. First and foremost in this collection of vulnerable tools is the Domain Name System.

The IETF is considering cancelling its 100th meeting now scheduled in Singapore in November 2017... because "concerns were raised about anti-LGBT laws."
