Inside the Information Society: Putting ICTs to rights by David Souter, Visiting Senior Fellow in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE

We talk a lot about ICTs and human rights. Adherence to human rights agreements is entrenched in the WSIS outcome documents and was reiterated in the WSIS+10 review agreed last year by the UN General Assembly. There were said to be more workshops at last year?s IGF on rights issues than any other theme.

Keeping internet governance out of the wrong hands

The U.S. government's decision to fully privatize oversight of the internet DNS is running into resistance. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) introduced a bill, S. 3034 / H.R. 5418, to "protect [the Internet] from authoritarian regimes." And Wall Street Journal columnist Gordon Crovitz warned that the U.S. administration is "handing authoritarian regimes the power they have long sought to censor the web globally." These concerns, while not irrational, are seriously overblown, and well-intended efforts to block the privatization plan would actually put internet freedom at greater risk.

The Commerce Department plans to give up its historic role as guarantor of the technical backbone of the Internet. Unless Commerce changes course by mid-August, the ?IANA? contract, by which it has supervised the Internet?s domain name system, will lapse at the end of September.

Bill Hartzer?s ?SEO and the Not Com Revolution? Presentation

Bill Hartzer is a SEO strategist, and he has been pretty vocal about the new gTLD domain names. I saw a presentation he gave at the 2016 Rocks Digital Marketing Conference held last week at the Addison, Texas Convention Center, and I want to share it with you. For those of you who have been following developments in the new gTLD space, many of the slides will look familiar. The World's Most Abused TLDs

TLD registries which allow registrars to sell high volumes of domains to professional spammers and malware operators in essence aid and abet the plague of abuse on the Internet. Some registrars and resellers knowingly sell high volumes of domains to these actors for profit, and many registries do not do enough to stop or limit this endless supply of domains.

Internet Security Days: Encryption Must Be Suitable for the Masses

Every Internet user has a vested interest in the security of their personal data. For the transfer and sharing of sensitive information, security should be an absolutely fundamental requirement. And yet, cryptography is barely ever used in everyday life ? or even in business? because the applications are too complicated and time-consuming. Security experts will explain the dangers this situation poses ? and elaborate on the conditions required for wide distribution of encryption ? at the Internet Security days on 22 and 23 September in Phantasialand in Bruel, near Cologne.

Reducing Your Risk For Ransomware and other Malware

In the first quarter of 2016 alone, according to the FBI, organizations paid more than $209 million to ransom data from hackers. That?s almost ten times more than the $24 million paid in all of 2015. That?s a sad testament to the high cost of malware ? and a testament to how indispensable DNS services can be in avoiding its spread across your network.

The Responsible Cybersquatter

We?ve all seen the typical pay-per-click websites that are reached by inputting certain domain names into the address bar. Domain registration cancelled due to Canadian Presence Requirements [registration]

A recent decision of a panel under the Canadian Internet Registration Authority Domain Name Dispute and Resolution Policy highlighted a peculiar aspect of the .ca registry, namely that a registrant must satisfy the Canadian Presence Requirements. The decision related to a case of typosquatting and considered the extent to which a .ca domain name must include a registered trademark.

Is There a Positive Business Case for IPv6? We Are About to Find Out, If You Help Us... by Marco Hogewoning

Large-scale IPv6 deployments suggest that IPv6 is at least a technical success, the technology works. Time to visit the other important question: does it work commercially. Does IPv6 really come with a positive business case? We are about to find out, if you help us... The Internet technical community has spent about two decades making IPv6 work on a technical level. We have developed the protocol, modified and expanded a few others; we set up the registry system and distributed the addresses.

Return of the Phantom: Part 4

All aboard! The Google quality train is making its way through the internet once again. This time, the engineer driving this metaphorical train is driven by quality and improved user experience. Where quality signals are concerned, we know this is the work of previous Phantom updates, which is why we at Searchmetrics are considering this update to be ?Phantom 4?. Clear trends have emerged in our data indicating that Google is devaluing specific areas of domains for pages exhibiting poor quality and experience for users ? a clear symptom of Phantom updates past.

Domain Name and Copyright Issues on Internet: A Trans-Jurisdictional Perspective by Priyal Thaker, Attorney at Law

Abstract: The internet launched a new era in the internationalization of trade. Any business can advertise its goods & services around the globe with minimum financial and other resources and if the goods and services can be converted into digital form, like music or software products in digital form and services like consultancy or educational services, then the same could be transmitted directly to purchasers using the global computer networks. While these developments in communication technology over the internet have raised considerable opportunities for business on online platform or popularly now known as e-commerce, it involves considerable legal risks.
