Heritage Holding Anti-IANA Transition Event With Cruz

The Heritage Foundation are conservative, in the American political sense. So it?s not surprising that they?ve been linked to some of the anti-IANA transition stuff coming from Ted Cruz and Co. Tomorrow they?re holding an event, which is clearly not aimed at bolstering support on Capitol Hill for the IANA transition.

CENTR Report on ICANN56

The new B meeting format left most attendants with mixed feelings. One of its main goals was to bring the different Supporting Organisations and Advisory Committees together and provide opportunities for cross-community policy discussions. While these sessions were well attended, they didn?t always result in meaningful policy debates.

Collaborate now, reduce litigation later: ICANN community urged to reach agreement on IP abuse provisions

In a letter to the Intellectual Property Constituency, ICANN has clarified that, while it will act to ensure that required contractual provisions related to abusive behaviour are included in registry-registrar agreements, its obligation to take action on IP infringing activity ends there. However, World Trademark Review has been told that the issue is ?far from resolved?, with the hope that ?fruitful? community collaboration will result in a satisfactory outcome. The alternative is that stakeholders, and ICANN itself, could later become embroiled in an atmosphere of court battles and regulatory oversight.

Top Router Maker TP-Link Loses Control Over Configuration Domain

Top router firm TP-Link has lost control of two key domains accessed by millions of consumers and small businesses each month. The domains, which are used to configure the company?s routers, have expired and been resold to domain name brokers who are actively seeking buyers.

< <https://threatpost.com/top-router-maker-tp-link-loses-control-over-configuration-domain/119072/> https://threatpost.com/top-router-maker-tp-link-loses-control-over-configuration-domain/119072/>

TP-Link forgets to register domain name, leaves config pages open to hijack

In common with many other vendors, TP-Link, one of the world's biggest sellers of Wi-Fi access points and home routers, has a domain name that owners of the hardware can use to quickly get to their router's configuration page. Unlike most other vendors, however, it appears that TP-Link has failed to renew its registration for the domain, leaving it available for anyone to buy. Any owner of the domain could feasibly use it for fake administration pages to phish credentials or upload bogus firmware. This omission was spotted by Amitay Dan, CEO of Cybermoon, and posted to the Bugtraq mailing list last week.

Oops! TP-Link forgets to Renew and Loses its Domains Used to Configure Router Settings

To make the configuration of routers easier, hardware vendors instruct users to browse to a domain name rather than numeric IP addresses.

Cyber Infringement of Trademarks by Typosquatting by Gerald M. Levine

A fabled, serial cybersquatter of the early Internet argued that typographical errors in domain names were not cybersquatting at all because they had their own distinct identities. Moreover, "I have" (he argued) "just as much right to own the [misspelled] Domain Names as the person who owns the correct spelling of [a] domain name."
