Ted Cruz Keeps Trying to Protect Internet Freedom in Weirdly Wrong Ways

At the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night, Ted Cruz delivered a controversial speech. Most of it was about freedom and party differences, but did you know that Cruz also has strong views about the technical bodies that oversee the internet? Welp, he does.

Adventures in Corporate Governance: Guarding the Internet by John C. Coffee Jr.

Academics who profess expertise in corporate governance sometimes find themselves on very strange turf. That has been my status for the last two years, serving as an advisor to the Commerce Department in connection with the Obama Administration?s efforts to ?privatize? the ICANN. ICANN is the non-profit entity that essentially manages the Internet?s domain name functions and oversees much of its internal plumbing.

ICANN 56 Helsinki Recap

MarkMonitor joined colleagues from around the world once again in June to participate in ICANN 56, held in Helsinki, Finland. This was the first ?Policy Forum? style ICANN meeting, a shorter and (potentially) more focused meeting structure dedicated to community work on ICANN policies as well as cross-constituency dialogue. Overall, the new structure was well received; a number of fruitful discussions and meaningful results contributed to a feeling of accomplishment and progress. Here are our highlights from the meeting.

Acknowledging a Homeland: .ruhr

Not only was the German .ruhr the first new TLD to become generally available, on 27 March 2014, as part of ICANN?s ?new gTLD Program?, it again took the lead with the announcement on 5 April 2016 by the telephone book publisher Sutter Telefonbuchverlag of it shifting its entire corporate communication to sutter.ruhr.

New gTLD benchmarks: How do your brands compare?

Following the major introduction of new gTLDs in 2014 and 2015, many digital brands are now wondering what their next move is regarding their online presence. As a brand owner, do you put all your eggs into the new gTLD basket and secure them before it?s too late, or stick to your current .COM, .ORG or .NET?

Will Rio miss the new gTLD race for the Olympics?

Four years ago, the new gTLD program was still in the conception phase. Whilst the results of the application phase had been known for well over a year, security concerns and contractual delays meant that no new gTLDs had yet been launched. The talk of the town back in the summer of 2012 was the London Olympic Games and the slick multi-billion-dollar marketing campaign that made it the first real digital games. The huge global TV audiences plus the hundreds of millions socially engaging would have been perfect for the marketers, but it was too much too early for them. Although we can now register the likes of dotLondon, dotGames or dotRun at the click of a button, what impact could they have on the XXXI Olympiad taking place in Rio from 5th to 21st August 2016?
