[DNS] Should this list continue to exist?

[DNS] Should this list continue to exist?

While I have only been a member of this list in the relatively inactive last few years, count me in as another voice for keeping it available.

Even should auDA continue to perform its function in such a way that there is no reason for complaint, there may be other issues in the brave new gTLD world.

Hi everyone

I like the point that Sean made - to paraphrase: like King Arthur and his knights, the list should remain, awaiting the hour of need for the Australian DNS. In the meantime, David's wonderful weekly posting, occasional resorts to the archives, and even more occasional outbreaks of controversy, give it a useful role.

Derek

Hey Rod

I'm also an member and I share your respect for the folks at auDA, but that's not the point.

This list pre-dates auDA and has always been independent thereof.

I refer you to Rob Taylor's point below, which is pretty pertinent, IMO.

I think it's important to have an outlet for people concerned about .au domains to have their say, that is not controlled by auDA.

I realise there are other lists/forums that arguably achieve this, but I think this list is worth keeping, as an independent, .au-focused list.

But, that's just my opinion.

cheers
jon

Jon,
I don't think as a member of Auda and knowing the people involved I don't think Auda hosting the list would be a political issue. To be fair to Auda they do have a balanced view and have a respect of the past to the .au history.
I don't always agree with Auda but overall they do a good job.
Having said that as a hosting provider of some size I would as the CEO of the Total Internet Group be happy to host the DNS list going forward as a service to the net community in Australia.
Let me know if you want this to happen Kim?

I agree that keeping the archives live is valuable. I'd prefer to keep them independent of auDA, however.

For those that aren't aware, full list archives (right back to 1996)
are here: www.dotau.org

Sean,
I am talking about the historical records which can be found if you
Google certain things the old DNS discussion list appears and yes I
have some old skeletons in the cupboard but I think the history is
worth keeping for the sake of history of the internet in Australia.
I am sure a lot of the pioneers of this industry would join me in
keeping the archived forums live for the future of the net in .au and
if you like the generation who will follow.
I urge Auda to take over the data on behalf of the stakeholders of the
net in .au Kim you have done a wonderful job over the years running
the list and I for one have had great enjoyment making comments and
watching the net grow in Australia.
Archive the list under auda.org.au/history.dnslist.
Thanks,
Rod Keys

Then who would watch the watchers?

We're silent now because, I'd assume, there's not too much beef with
the job AuDA is performing. If this were ever to change, would AuDA
tollerate criticism?

Maybe Auda could host it for historical reasons?

One note of possible caution - In .UK there was a 'nom-steer' list
much like this, quite quiet and dormant much of the time but very
useful as and when it was needed.

Nominet then 'improved' things by closing it and moving to a
vbulletin system inside their online services, and the reach &
debate appears to be all but nullified.

Cheers,

For those not familiar with this list's history, it was
started in the
mid-1990s and was the location where the seminal discussion on
.AU happened. The discussion involved key members of the nascent
Internet community in Australia, and was the hub of activity
that lead to the creation of auDA to manage the the .AU space.

Today the list if effectively dormant. auDA does not use it to
disseminate or discuss issues relating to .AU, and there are
little in the way of community discussion here on .AU. For
example, auDA saw fit to report to the AusNOG mailing list about
DNSSEC initiatives in .AU, but not here
(http://lists.ausnog.net/pipermail/ausnog/2014-March/023181.html
)

I'd like to pose the question whether this forum should be retired.
There is certainly no problem sustaining its existence if it
continues to fulfil a purpose. However, it may be its time has
come after 20 years and is no longer a needed part of the
community.

I'd appreciate members' thoughts.
