The Future of the Internet is at a Crossroads by Joao Schwarz da Silva

Discussion on the future shape of the Internet has been raging for some years now. Issues debated have included net neutrality, the ?Internet of things?, trust and privacy in the online world, freedom of expression, government control, the right to be forgotten and governance of personal data, and the list does not stop there. In Europe legislation is in the works at Union and national levels addressing these issues with net neutrality and data protection proving highly contentious, and European courts have recently weighed in against industry on the right to be forgotten.

Results of the First New gTLD Auction

On 4 June 2014 ICANN through its authorized auction services provider, Power Auctions LLC, completed the first auction to resolve a contention set for a new gTLD string. Contention sets are groups of applications for identical or confusingly similar strings.

< <http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/announcements-and-media/announcement-3-04jun14-en> http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/announcements-and-media/announcement-3-04jun14-en>

New gTLD Auctions: On Track for the First Auction on 4 June 2014

As applicants work to secure rights to the 1,300+ TLDs that are expected to go live as part of the New gTLD Program, there are cases where more than one applicant applied for the same or confusingly similar strings. The Applicant Guidebook foresaw this scenario and prescribed Auctions as the method of last resort to resolve these contention sets in a clear and objective way.

Study to Evaluate Solutions for the Submission and Display of Internationalized Contact Data

Purpose (Brief): This Public Forum invites comments on the report of the study conducted to evaluate available solutions for the submission and display of internationalized contact data (such as WHOIS). The study was designed to inform the ICANN community of the feasibility of transliteration, transcription or translation (collectively transformation) of internationalized registration data for its broader accessibility. The study examined current practices for handling internationalized contact data by e-merchants, registries and registrars. It explored the support of such data by relevant technical protocols. The study also assessed the accuracy implications of transforming internationalized contact data.

.WED Registry Agreement Amendment - Introduction of Third Level Domain Sales

Purpose (Brief): On 8 October 2013, Atgron, Inc., the registry operator of the .wed TLD, submitted a Registry Services Evaluation Policy (RSEP) request to allow the sale of third level domains in the TLD. Second House Amendment Ups the Stakes on IANA Transition by Philip S. Corwin

The House of Representatives has passed another measure related to the proposed IANA functions transition, and has again attached it to "must pass" legislation. This move ups the ante and may well be the final straw that compels the Senate Commerce Committee to hold its own oversight hearing on the IANA transition proposal. On May 30th the House adopted the Duffy Amendment to the Appropriations bill funding the Commerce, Justice, and State Departments in FY 2015. The final vote on the amendment was 229 in favor and 178 opposed -- it was fairly partisan outcome, with only ten Democrats voting aye while just one Republican voted nay.

Tough Choices Two Years In by Jacob Malthouse

At the start of my term as New TLD Applicant Group (NTAG) Chair, I wrote about the importance of the 50th ICANN meeting for applicants. The meeting is significant, not only as a milestone for ICANN, but also because it marks two years since ICANN began processing new gTLD applications. Two years in, the program is at an inflection point. The final initial evaluation result was published two weeks ago and the first ICANN auction will take place this week.

An important lesson in pre-ordering new TLDs

Registering domain names under new TLDs when they hit the market is similar to dropcatching expired domain names. From the registrar?s perspective, it involves prioritizing domains and hitting pinging the registry as quickly as possible.

Where the usual (trademark enforcement) rules don?t apply

In the world of internet governance, the big political issue of the moment is the proposed transfer of the IANA function to ICANN. Elsewhere, however, there are moves to develop an online space that is beyond the control of ICANN. Should this take off, it would create both opportunities and potential headaches for brands.

If only computers themselves were smart enough to fight off malevolent hackers. The weird Google searches of the unemployed and what they say about the economy

If you really want to know how the economy is doing now, just Google it. At least that?s the goal of a growing number of researchers who are turning to big data in hopes of unlocking the secrets of the economy at the speed of the Internet. The movement ? dubbed ?nowcasting? ? is piquing the interest of policymakers in Washington and around the world frustrated by the long lag in official government statistics as they make decisions where timing is everything.

Cyberbullying Triples According to New McAfee "2014 Teens and the Screen study"

McAfee, part of Intel Security, today released findings from the company's 2014 Teens and the Screen study: Exploring Online Privacy, Social Networking and Cyberbullying. The annual study examines the online behavior and social networking habits of U.S. preteens and teens. The most significant finding from this year?s study reveals that 87% of youth have witnessed cyberbullying versus last year when 27% of youth witnessed cruel behavior online. This behavior was perceived to result in anger and embarrassment, leading to a broader theme about how online behavior is impacting their offline lives. The study highlights how risky online activity can follow them offline and possibly make them even more susceptible to cyberbullying.

Though popular for porn, Mobile Safari drops below half of mobile Web traffic

As the now unsupported (unless you know the right workaround) Windows XP slowly declines, this month packed one surprise: mobile Safari lost its majority share of the mobile Web. Though the browser still holds a plurality of the usage share, it dropped below 50 percent this month.

If Google can get rid of personal data, why can't it purge the pirates?

Google's decision to allow users to easily de-list certain personal information from search results has infuriated a film and music industry that argues the internet giant should act as decisively to help squash digital piracy.

John Oliver?s net neutrality rant may have caused FCC site crash

Outside of Washington, D.C., the Federal Communications Commission is one of the sleepier government agencies. It doesn?t get people worked up in the same way the Department of Education does (just mention the words ?common core curriculum? and watch people foam at the mouth) and it doesn?t have the dewy newness of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Not anymore.
