Looking Back at ICANN: NSI's Courtroom Victories Paved Way for Modern Domain Name Industry

Many years ago, most likely 1997, I received a telephone call from an attorney who said he had seen BNA's coverage of Internet law developments. When New TLDs Meet Legacy TLDs

The average Internet user is surely familiar with that twinge of annoyance felt when confronted by a red error message after typing an incorrect email address or password. But annoyance could turn to technologically fueled rage if email addresses containing new TLDs are incompatible with the sites users are trying to access.

Changes in Spamhaus DBL DNSBL return codes

Spamhaus engineers have been busy developing new data for the Spamhaus Domain Block List (DBL) during the past several months. Our efforts have produced several specialized subsets of the DBL data set which will provide Spamhaus DBL users with better protection against spam as well as against other cyber threats (bots and malware) which are targeting ordinary internet users every day. This new data makes DBL more effective and versatile yet maintains DBL's goal for near zero false positives and widespread usability in production environments.

IKEA waits 8 years, then shuts down IKEAhackers site with trademark claim - IKEA lawyers pushed site to go non-commercial or give up its domain name.

Jules Yap (a pseudonym) created the IKEAHackers website in 2006 for the purpose of gathering together all the cool "hacks" of IKEA furniture she had seen around the Internet. The ideas range from simply adding decorations to make a piece look unique to major revamps that require "power tools and lots of ingenuity." With the Americas running out of IPv4, it?s official: The Internet is full

In April, ARIN, the (North) American Registry for Internet Numbers, announced that it had reached "phase 4" of its IPv4 countdown plan, with fewer than 17 million IPv4 addresses remaining. There is no phase 5. APNIC, the Asia-Pacific registry, reached the 17 million (one "/8" or 2^24 IPv4 addresses) threshold three years ago, and the RIPE NCC in Europe less than two years ago. LACNIC, the Latin American and Caribbean registry, reached a similar threshold of a little more than four million remaining IPv4 addresses earlier this week.

The IETF's *Other* Diversity Challenge by Chris Grundemann

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is the standards body for the Internet. It is the organization that publishes and maintains the standards describing the Internet Protocol (IP -- versions 4 and 6), and all directly related and supporting protocols, such as TCP, UDP, DNS (and DNSSEC), BGP, DHCP, NDP, the list goes on, and on... But how do they do that? How does the IETF produce documents, and ensure that they are high quality, relevant, and influential?

OECD: The Development of Fixed Broadband Networks

This report examines the development of fixed networks and their ability to support the Internet economy. Enhancements to fixed broadband networks remain critical despite the growth in the use of wireless services. In fact, growth in the use of data over wireless networks actually increases demands on fixed networks.

Broadband access network speed tests by country

This page provides links to network speed tests in OECD countries. The actual performance of Internet connections, particularly their speed, is critical to meeting various objectives set out by a range of stakeholders including consumers, policy makers and regulators. It is a fundamental metric for consumers to make informed choices as it reflects the quality of their experience and enables them to assess any differences between advertised speeds and actual speeds. For policy makers and regulators, being able to assess broadband performance is essential in ensuring accessibility to services (e.g. education, health and so forth) and whether services are meeting their goals for overall market development (e.g. competitiveness, coverage and so forth).

Privacy experts say Facebook changes open up ?unprecedented? data collection

Facebook came under fire Thursday from privacy advocates who say that changes to its ad network mark an unprecedented expansion of its ability to collect users' personal data. Time to terminate termination charges?

It used to cost well over $2 a minute to call between OECD countries. The breakup of telecoms monopolies and the introduction of competition means callers now pay as little as $0.01 per minute, or may even have unlimited calls as part of a monthly bundle. Outside the OECD countries, the price has been dropping too, accompanied by a huge increase in traffic. Calls from the United States to India increased eight fold over 2003-2011 for example. But not everybody has benefited. Despite a massive increase in the number of telephones in Africa, international calls to that continent from the United States remained stagnant during this same period.
