?U.S. monopoly over Internet must go?

Louis Pouzin is recognised for his contributions to the protocols that make up the fundamental architecture of the Internet. Most of his career has been devoted to the design and implementation of computer systems, most notably the CYCLADES computer network and its datagram-based packet-switching network, a model later adopted by the Internet as Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP). Apart from the Chevalier of L?gion d?Honneur, Mr. Pouzin, 83, was the lone Frenchman among American awardees of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, given to the inventors of Internet technology in its inaugural year, 2013.

European Commission position for Internet Governance Forum 2014, Istanbul 2-5 Sept

The 2014 Internet Governance Forum (IGF) will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from 2-5 September. This UN-initiated body is a multi-stakeholder, non-decision making forum of global importance for forward-looking discussions on Internet issues.

< <http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-14-513_en.htm> http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-14-513_en.htm>

Why Internet governance should be left to the engineers

As the Internet and the disruptive innovations it spawns are becoming economically, politically, and culturally vital for the world?s three billion users (and counting), there?s been a worrisome though unsurprising outburst of initiatives across governments to figure out ways to control it, suppress it, or otherwise extract value from it.

< <http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/innovations/wp/2014/09/03/why-internet-governance-should-be-left-to-the-engineers/> http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/innovations/wp/2014/09/03/why-internet-governance-should-be-left-to-the-engineers/>

Beyond NETmundial ? Why Getting The IANA Transition Right is Essential

Beyond NETmundial: The Roadmap for Institutional Improvements to the Global Internet Governance Ecosystem was launched on Monday at IGF Istanbul. The book, published by the Internet Policy Observatory at the University of Pennsylvania, looks at a broad set of Internet governance-related institutional issues following the NETmundial meeting last April in Brazil. Stakeholders came to the NETmundial meeting from around the globe, debated a range of Internet governance issues and adopted, by rough consensus, the NETmundial Multistakeholder Statement. These outcomes include consideration of the evolution of the Internet ecosystem ? with a particular focus on the IGF and the IANA transition.

Abortion, ICANN, and Internet governance

I have a feeling that I will be spending increasing amounts of my time in the next year or so on ?Internet governance? questions, and particularly those connected to ICANN, the folks who oversee the operation of the Internet?s domain name system, and I?m always on the lookout for good illustrations of why ICANN matters, and why ?Internet governance? matters, and what they have to do with one another.

In less than nine months, more than 2.1 million domain names have been registered in new gTLDs, which Donuts say is exceeding even aggressive early estimates. And Donuts is the largest of the new gTLD providers providing backend registry services for 150 new gTLDs accounting for 867,800 domains, or 41.1 percent of all domains registered across the new gTLDs.
