The Final Leaked TPP Text is All That We Feared ... Top-Down Control of the Internet

Today's release by Wikileaks of what is believed to be the current and essentially final version of the intellectual property (IP) chapter of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) confirms our worst fears about the agreement, and dashes the few hopes that we held out that its most onerous provisions wouldn't survive to the end of the negotiations. ... ICANN, the global domain name authority, provoked a furore earlier this year over proposals that could limit the ability for owners of domain names to shield their personal information from copyright and trademark trolls, identity thieves, scammers and harassers. The TPP has just ridden roughshod over that entire debate (at least for ccTLDs such as .us, .au and .jp), by cementing in place rules (QQ.C.12) that countries must provide ?online public access to a reliable and accurate database of contact information concerning domain-name registrants.?

An alternative to CCWG Overreach

ICANN is in the midst (I wouldn't yet say the middle) of its transition from oversight by the US Department of Commerce to oversight by something else. A Cross Community Working Group on Accountability delivered a long report in August that proposes a new oversight structure for ICANN. But it has the practical problem that the ICANN board really, really hates it. Having looked at it, I can't entirely blame them.

nl: How secure is your webshop?

Naturally, you are proud of your business and you want to show it off. At street level and on line. But what if your webshop is hacked and information about your customers leaked? Responsibility for cyber security isn't limited to your hosting service provider or IT technician. It is shared by everyone within your business. It's very important, therefore, to know how to defend yourself against cybercriminals and to strengthen your negotiating position with suppliers.

Verisign Champions Cybersecurity Awareness in October

Cybersecurity is no longer a concern for just IT and security professionals. Recent breaches at organizations like Sony, Target, JP Morgan Chase, and numerous U.S. government entities have brought the issue of cyber-attacks very close to home. If you bank online, use your debit card at a local store or engage in any activity that relies on an Internet-connected system, you are at risk.

OECD: CEOs and governments should treat digital security as an economic risk

A global, interconnected, open and dynamic digital environment brings considerable business and economic opportunities - and holds even more promise as the Internet of Things and Big Data become pervasive. Learn to think like an attacker to stay safe online

It?s National Cyber Security Awareness Month. You?ll be seeing a lot of encouraging words to ?be aware? of cybersecurity. But how the heck are we supposed to do that? Cybersecurity done well is ideally something people don?t have to think about! However, a big part of cybersecurity awareness involves being able to estimate and plan accordingly for common threats. In the technical community, we call this threat modeling.

Freed from the daily grind of politics since last November, Baillieu decided to revamp his personal website a few months back, focusing on life after Spring Street. Most Reliable Hosting Company Sites in September 2015

For the second month in a row, GoDaddy had the most reliable hosting company website. Throughout September, it was the only company to respond to all of Netcraft's requests, with an average connection time of only 8 milliseconds. This is the fifth time this year that GoDaddy has been in the top ten.

There are a finite supply of quality domain names in every vertical. The adoption space was no different. In my opinion there are a few domains that are on par with ?Adopting?. It?s important to point out there are two primary consumers of the term adopting. There are those as it relates to both the adopting of people and pets.

Top 3 Names on This Week's Sales Chart Total $1.35 Million - All Are 3-Digit or 3-Letter Domains

If you "go short" in most markets you are betting prices will go down. The domain market is just the opposite with prices for short .com domains continuing to sell at nosebleed levels. This year's darlings have been 3-letter or 3-digit domains (2, of course, is even better).

Under my thumb: Governments grapple with law enforcement in the virtual world

If FBI agents equipped with an American search warrant broke into a safetydeposit box owned by an American firm in Dublin to seize letters that might help catch a drug-dealer, it would provoke uproar. But that is essentially what the FBI wants to be able to do in the virtual realm. It has asked a court to order Microsoft, in its capacity as an e-mail provider, to hand over messages from a suspect in a drugs case that are stored in an Irish data centre. After two lower courts sided with the government, an appeals court in New York will rule soon on whether the firm must comply.

Spies and internet giants are in the same business: surveillance. But we can stop them

On Tuesday, the European court of justice, Europe?s supreme court, lobbed a grenade into the cosy, quasi-monopolistic world of the giant American internet companies.

TPP leaked: Wikileaks releases intellectual property chapter of controversial internet and medicine-regulating trade agreement

Wikileaks has released the Intellectual Property Rights chapter of the controversial Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, which they claim contains rules and regulations that would have "wide-ranging effects on internet services, medicines, publishers, civil liberties and biological patents."

Wikileaks release of TPP deal text stokes 'freedom of expression' fears

Wikileaks has released what it claims is the full intellectual property chapter of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the controversial agreement between 12 countries that was signed off on Monday.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Every silver lining has a cloud

UNTIL this week, the world had not seen a big multilateral trade pact for over 20 years. The deal that has broken the drought?the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which comprises 12 countries in Asia and the Americas, including the United States and Japan?is welcome. But those who believe in free trade, and the benefits it brings, ought not to miss the bigger picture. The backdrop to this week?s deal is a bleak one.

The Final Leaked TPP Text is All That We Feared

Today's release by Wikileaks of what is believed to be the current and essentially final version of the intellectual property (IP) chapter of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) confirms our worst fears about the agreement, and dashes the few hopes that we held out that its most onerous provisions wouldn't survive to the end of the negotiations.

What We Know So Far About Digital Rights in the Still Secret Final TPP Text

Trade negotiators announced their agreement over the terms of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on Monday, and yet the exact terms of the deal remain as secret as ever. For more than five years, we have been given a series of dubious justifications for keeping the text under close wraps. Now that it's done, there is absolutely no reason they should not release it immediately.

Thoughts on the Open Internet - Part 6: Final Thoughts by Geoff Huston

Today we just don't have an "Open" Internet. The massive proliferation of network-based middleware has resulted in an internet that has few remaining open apertures. Most of the time the packet you send is not precisely the packet I receive, and all too often if you deviate from a very narrowly set of technical constraints within this packet, then the packet you send is the packet I will never receive. more?

Thoughts on the Open Internet - Part 5: Security by Geoff Huston

Any form of public communications network necessarily exposes some information about the identity and activity of the user's of its services. The extent to which such exposure of information can be subverted and used in ways that are in stark opposition to the users' individual interests forms part of the motivation on the part of many users to reduce such open exposure to an absolute minimum. The tensions between a desire to protect the user through increasing the level of opacity of network transactions to third party surveillance, and the need to expose some level of basic information to support the functions of a network lies at the heart of many of the security issues in today's Internet.
