Battle lines drawn as bill introduced to scupper ICANN's IANA transition
plan

While the IANA transition is something that many IP counsel have not been
intrinsically involved in, 2016 INTA president Ronald van Tuijl has
characterised the development as something "that trademark owners cannot
ignore". For those following closely, it has been a potentially significant
week - while the Commerce Department has given ICANN's proposals a
favourable assessment, a bill has been introduced that could halt the
handover in its tracks.

Q and A on IANA Stewardship Transition

WHAT IS THE IANA STEWARDSHIP TRANSITION? The IANA stewardship transition
represents the final step in the U.S. government's long-standing commitment
to privatize the Internet's domain name system. For the last 18 years, the
United States has been working with the global Internet multistakeholder
community to establish a stable and secure multistakeholder model of Intent
governance that ensures that the private sector, not governments, takes the
lead in setting the future direction of the Internet's DNS.

Many companies protect their brands by registering domain names that are

Best practices for fighting counterfeiters online

Counterfeiting is a growing, global problem that affects all industries -
from electronics and technology, to luxury fashion goods and low margin
consumer goods. The scale of the problem is apparent in both the demand for

example, is the source of approximately $1.2 billion of the $1.7 billion in
counterfeit goods confiscated by U.S. law enforcement agencies in 2013.

How Content, SEO and Social Media Make Your Life Easier

Blam! A lot of conversations these days go something like this: "Let's focus
on content marketing. Amazingly high-value and high-quality content is
clearly what's Google's looking for (all those online articles I read say
so), so why sweat traditional SEO and social media as much as we used to?"

Is Domain Name Classification a Property Right or a Contractual Right? The
Circuit Split and a Clear Path Forward by Nicholas Foss Barbantonis [Wake
Forest Law Review Common Law]

Abstract: This article breaks new ground in applying classical trademark and
property law to cutting-edge questions in cyberlaw. It offers a theoretical
approach to determine whether re-registration of domain names constitute
"registration" under the Anti-Cybersquatting Protection Act (ACPA). The
article is based on the Eleventh Circuit's recent decision in Jysk Bed'N
Linen Inc. v. Dutta-Roy, which rejects the Ninth Circuit's decision in
GoPets v. Hise. The Eleventh Circuit held that re-registration of domain
names indeed constitute registration under the ACPA.

Long-Term IETF Evolution

In the midst of a day's discussion about particular issue that troubles us
with technology or something else, it can be difficult to focus on topics
that have a longer timescale. As you probably remember, I had asked a design
team to write a draft about various trends around us that affect the IETF.

MILLION-DOLLAR URLS: The most expensive domain names of all time

We scoured domain name resource DN Journal and put together a list of
documented million-dollar, domain-only ".com" sales. Some have been squatted
on for 20 years and have only recently traded hands. Unsurprisingly, sex-
and gambling-related domains are some of the biggest money makers.

How Much Are Your Domains Really Worth? Part 1

Over the last few years there has been a rush of capital into the domain
industry from two major sources, Chinese investors and speculators. I have
written quite a lot on the Chinese investors but have largely ignored the
speculators.

How Will a Chinese Economic Hard Landing Impact Domain Investors?

I've taken a great deal of interest in the Chinese economy of late and I've
written a number of articles that outline how everything is not so good in
the dragon nation. Debt continues to skyrocket, GDP is levelling off and
there appears to be stockpiles of commodities that are unused. So how is
this all going to impact domain investors?
