Internet governance as seen from the Right to Development

Indian students gather for a protest against Facebook?s "Free Basics" in Hyderabad, India, Tuesday, December, 2015. Mahesh Kumar A/Press Association. All rights reserved. The mother of all controversies about the Internet is about its global governance; neatly polarized between those who believe that it is time to herald a new international institutional response adequate to our collective predicament as 'things of the Internet', and status quoists who believe that the Internet-mediated world order is serving us well, and any change will portend ominous consequences for the Internet's future.

Those Who Don't Remember 2014 Are Doomed to Repeat It by Christian Dawson

J. Gordon Crovitz is making his case against the IANA transition again today, in the pages of the Wall Street Journal. I think it's useful to once again go on record opposing his flawed logic against the transition. i2Coalition was among those that publicly praised the IANA transition report when it arrived this week. When the Washington Post covered our announcement, I was frustrated by a commenter who has a different take on the transition than I.

IANA Transition Proposal Meets NTIA Criteria Necessary to Advance

Another major milestone has been reached in the IANA transition with the NTIA announcing in a report that the community proposal meets the necessary requirements to move forward. This report, along with the adoption on May 27th by the ICANN Board of the bylaw changes necessary to implement the Stewardship and Accountability proposals, should provide a significant level of comfort to those expressing concerns about the transition.

IANA Transition Needs Clear Benchmarks and Safety Valves by J. Scott Evans

The transition of the IANA to the multi-stakeholder community is one step closer to becoming reality. The NTIA approved the proposal submitted by the ICANN to privatize oversight of the internet domain name system's central root zone last week, crossing a critical hurdle for advocates of the transition. However, two recent Congressional hearings have put the IANA transition back in the crosshairs of many policymakers and political pundits, keeping the likelihood of the transition occurring before September up in the air once again.

Disputes Falling Outside the Scope of the UDRP by Gerald M. Levine

The UDRP is a forum of limited jurisdiction designed for trademark owners to combat a certain kind of tortious (sometimes tipping to criminal) conduct by which registrants register domain names with the bad faith intent of taking economic advantage of owner's marks and injuring consumers by beguiling them to disclose personal information. The forum is not open to trademark owners whose claims are outside its scope, even though they may include allegations of cybersquatting.

Google Ignores Keywords/Content In TLDs

The other day we reported how Gary Illyes said keywords in TLDs, like those new keyword based TLDs, do not improve your rankings. So I wanted to get more clarification. Was it that keywords in general in the URL are such a light weight signal that Google wouldn't say they make a difference in rankings or was it that Google specifically ignored the words in the TLD.
