Further to Chris' email below, I'd like this list to know that the sole
benefit NetRegistry gets from providing the hosting and equipment for AUNIC
is acknowledgement of that on the AUNIC service. This service is provided by
NetRegistry at a cost of many tens of $000's.

The AUNIC website will shortly be amended to provide this acknowledgement on
the footer of all AUNIC pages. It is certainly not our intention to upset
the Australian DNS community, but rather to balance the cost to NetRegistry
of providing this service to AUDA and the Australian DNS community free of
charge.

NetRegistry is committed to providing a stable, robust, highly available
AUNIC service. We have repeatedly been involved in efforts to upgrade,
reform and generally better the Australian DNS service to the benefit of
all - not just NetRegistry. We have been a part of the process that led to
the formation of AUDA from its inception over three years ago and continue
to support the move to a sound industry self regulatory environment for .AU.
We have offered (and that offer remains) to administer .org.au at no cost as
a service to the Australian Internet community.

If there are those of you that feel acknowledgement of NetRegistry's
contribution to AUNIC is inappropriate on the AUNIC website, please email me
off the list. If you are prepared to stand by your comments, I am happy for
those comments to be made visible at an appropriate place on the NetRegistry
website with your name attached. But remember that when AUNIC was not
working everyone screamed for something to be done about it.

Well, NetRegistry and AUDA did do something about it. Check it out. It
rocks.

I do not believe there is any problem but, again, for clarity, here is the
situation. NetRegistry were the successful tenderer last year when we asked
for tenders to host AUNIC. They agreed to do the job for no cost to auDA (an
important consideration given our purpose of keeping costs low, but not the
only consideration) provided that we acknowledged (in various ways on the
site) that they were hosting the site. auDA's lawyers advised on the tender
and it was they who examined the various offers in detail and came back to
the Board with a recommendation that the NetRegistry tender was the best.

I am not sure why anyone should believe this to be a problem. We are saving
a significant amount of money and have solved a serious problem (the
slowness and unreliability of AUNIC). NetRegistry are providing us with a
service (backed by Optus incidentally) which ensures the stability and
effectiveness of AUNIC and they deserve some recognition for that. I have no
qualms whatsoever about acknowledging them on the site. All acknowledgements
will make it abundantly clear that they are hosting the site for us so there
can be no confusion as to who runs AUNIC.

Not knowing the details of the hosting, I would think it is appropriate for
any sort of sponsor to be listed.  It may be beneficial to include the
details of the sponsorship and also appropriate to list how others may
provide the same level of sponsorship.

It is difficult in that any such sponsors will most likely be involved in
the industry and there may be calls of impropriety levelled by competitors.
That is something that can be countered by having any sponsorship program
open to scrutiny and providing information on the web site regarding any
sponsorship deals.
